MSNBC Mornings: What Now That Imus Is Gone?

Bad timing for them since CNN debuts a new morning show Monday. And Fox News continues to dominate the cable news nets.

I don't see them getting another talk host. And a straight news show would get killed iin the ratings.

Whatever happened to Sharon Tay? She did a bang-up job at KTLA doing the early am news and filling-in doing the morning show host chores before she left for MSNBC to do the weekend entertainment shows. She'd make a great start-up morning show addition.

We all agree that what IMUS said was STUPID and caused hurt to people. And as he has said, “had I not said it we wouldn’t be talking about it”. We have been hearing about the hurt that it has caused the women of Rutgers and women in general. Has anyone given any thought to the message that the firing sends to our kids. Are we telling our kids that life accepts no apologies for anything you do? What IMUS said was wrong on many levels. But it was not illegal in the eyes of broadcasting. There were no bad words used (bad taste yes) or fowl language. To our kids….if you ever miss speak or make a mistake, you will never be forgiven for it. The words I AM SORRY have been scratched from our vocabulary.

A valid argument indeed that brings us to an untenable position.

You illustrated the proverbial "rock"; the accompanying "hard place" is doing too little and sending the message that, no matter what hateful or hurtful things one says, an apology is the salve that makes any transgression go away.

This one is a "darned if you don't and danged if you do."

The best course available is that Imus gets fired/cancelled, but will get another shot sometime soon. College basketball is analogous to broadcasting in this case. Look at Bob Knight, Bob Huggins, Larry Eustachy, et al, who were rightfully blown out for bad acts but got another shot at coaching, sooner rather than later. Imus is, with and despite all his faults, a Hall of Fame broadcaster. Hopefully, he'll be an even better one hereafter.

I know this won't be a popular suggestion, but I'll make it anyway. In place of Imus, I reccommend that MSNBC run some....news.

Between all the features, talk shows, and personalities, it's hard to find actual straight hard news on cable news channels these days. I know it doesn't pull big ratings like Imus or O'Reilly, but that's often the reason I tune to cable news. Keep in mind that the rationale for creating CNN-Headline News in the first place was so people would have a place to go to for straight news when CNN was running Larry King, features, or specials. But now the evenings on HN are filled with Nancy Grace and Glenn Beck.

They could replace Imus with repeat showings of Blazing Saddles and White Chicks.

I happen to agree with you. With all of the talent at NBC one would think it wouldn't be that difficult to put together a viable news product on their cable network.

Mike Barnicle is supposedly filling-in.
I only caught the last 20 minutes, but it was David Gregory filling the time today with guests and viewer calls. Gee, on What I wonder? Hmmmmm.......could it beeeeeeeeeee........IMUS!?!?!?

Also, where they ran that "added" 30 minutes before today, they've reverted back to a replay of First Look.

Why? Where are the O'Brien's going other than away from their old morning gig at CNN? If they're no longer at CNN, I see them picking up where they left off with a new morning show on MSNBC.

Cheers :D
