MSNBC Not On Verizon Fios Lineup

Can anyone explain why - without engaging in any politically-charged arguments - MSNBC is only carried in "selected areas" on the Verizon FiOS channel lineup in New York? I think it's unheard of, since VZ has no problem beaming the signals from CNBC, Bravo and all of the other NBC cable channels, even Universal HD!

I read about this recently. MSNBC is not available on Verizon lineups in Cablevision service areas. This is because a long time ago Cablevision had an exclusivity agreement to carry MSNBC (I believe it started back when MSNBC first came on the air). I have no idea how long that agreement was supposed to last but I think Verizon is fighting it. The whole thing seems silly to me as MSNBC is just one of many news networks. I don't really see anything special about it.

MSNBC when it started needed cable coverage, and desperately in the NYC market immediately, so they signed the exclusive deal even if it limited exposure/coverage. Cablevision at the time was facing competition from RCN, so used this tactic to get them an exclusive channel over RCN.

I remember in the Philadelphia area however, MSNBC and Fox News didn't get carriage widespread for about 3-4 years later, after launch. New channel doesn't get automatic carriage. The contract is unusual, no expiration date?, and was really intended on Cablevision's side against RCN (and future terresterial providers...now being Verizon) not the satellite companies, so it's not like total exclusivity of the channel.

The Cablevision contract doesn't make sense. Here in Newburgh it's all Time Warner cable, but MSNBC is not on FiOS what gives? Shouldn't places without direct competition from cablevision get MSNBC?

Update: Verizon Fios has now added MSNBC HD lineups...

... yet still not cleared in New York City on SD, let alone HD.

Great to see everyone's priorities are in order! :D
We lost mistake-NBC on anologue over the summer. It is available on 2 digitals but no HD. Since one of the channels is in 2 digits, I figure that's temporary.
This is on Comcast here in Sa-ra-so-ta!.

I just had a thought: Perhaps the impending merger of NBC and Comcast means good news for FiOS subscribers who can't get MSNBC... or... bad news for non-Comcast subscribers?

Yeah, the Comcast purchase of a Major Over the Air and programming provider such as NBC smells of anti-trust.

Should we use any Comcast franchised municipality, as an example, such as here in Sa-ra-so-ta!, Florida, or Brick, NJ, the competition is with FiOS, Dish, and DirecTV. Do you offer CN8, CSS, and SNN6, to the other eye providers as NBC is doing now with ShopNBC, MSNBC, CNBC, NBC, USA, and Bravo? Along with the Spanish Telemundo? ...and The Weather Channel?
