MSNBC PREMANENTLY CANCEL DON IMUS

Statement from NBC News: "Effective immediately, MSNBC will no longer simulcast the "Imus in the Morning" radio program. This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees. What matters to us most is that the men and women of NBC Universal have confidence in the values we have set for this company. This is the only decision that makes that possible. Once again, we apologize to the women of the Rutgers basketball team and to our viewers. We deeply regret the pain this incident has caused." From: http://mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

I wish NBC-U had let market forces decide this, but at the end of the day, I guess they were (advertisers pulling out, etc.) ?

...and BOOM! goes the dymamite.

The above statement is posted in full on the NBCU Media Village site. No point in linking it as it's all they say.

Obviously, this was the final straw for MSNBC (and, in turn, NBC News). NBC News President Steve Capus said on "Hardball" after the statement broke that Imus had racked up a long list of inappropriate content over time. Nothing as hurtful as now, however. So, if you wanted to watch the Imus Radiothon, watch your radio.

And if you don't have a station carrying Imus in your area... well....

Anyway, I won't be surprised if MSNBC makes Imus repay every penny raised for the no-longer-"tele"-telethon from MSNBC viewers. The plus side of this cancellation is that MSNBC felt that Imus' attitude does not fit the channel's image. But the minus side is that they did it in the middle of his fund-raising effort, meaning that his charity will end up earning less. Also, no doubt MSNBC itself may end up being hurt ratingswise in the morning, if viewers choose to watch something else on another channel, instead of something else on MSNBC.

I don;t watch or listen to Imus, but who ends up getting hurt has yet to be determined.

Imus Fired: Capus Tells Staffers Why

NBC News president Steve Capus' internal message to staffers:

"Over the course of the last week many of you have reached out to me and expressed your strong viewpoints on the Don Imus situation. I've had countless conversations, e-mail exchanges and phone calls with people throughout this company. I've heard you loud and clear. Therefore, we are announcing tonight that MSNBC will no longer simulcast the Imus radio program...

My primary concern has been and always will be the integrity of this division. We are the guardians of the good name of NBC News -- each and every one of us. There has been a trust placed in us. We must honor and respect this trust. That, in short is why we have taken this action." From: http://mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

I want to know what they can do that won't compete with Today (which I'm sure is a mortal sin at NBCU) but still draw some sort of ratings.

I hope it's *not* a "Morning DOC BLOCK" and I *really* hope it's not an expanded edition of iVillage Live (yecch).

I am concerned that at least temporarily, they will most likely loop First Look for a few hours.

How about offering "All Weather. All Morning."? They could offer a national feed of NBC Weather Plus during the former Imus timeslot.

That's actually not a bad idea. Which means you'll never see it executed.

Re: MSNBC PERMANTLEY CANCELS DON IMUS

What choice did MSNBC have? Their major sponsors bailed, a number of NBC employees wanted Imus gone and they took their complaints to the President of NBC news. A decision had to be made.

Yes the argument is going to be made that Imus should have been allowed to meet with the Rutgers Basketball team, serve out his two week suspension, then executives at both MSNBC and CBS radio make a decision on Imus' future. From a business perspective however its best to get this entire episode over with.

On the other hand there have been 'shock jocks' who have said and done worse things and they are still working in the business.

My take in it is that CBS radio will also cave and fire Imus. Then Imus' mentor, Uncle Mel, will offer him a job on satellite radio. Unfortunately for Imus its not cable TV and he won't garner the audience he once had.

As I wrote in another post the bigger question is what will those radio stations who carry Imus do to fill the void? As for MSNBC, it's doubtful they will go with another radio personality to replace Imus. Instead they will either feature an early morning team like FOX or just have news readers like CNN.

Just this morning I was watching "Mike and Mike" on ESPN2. They were recounting a story how a guy with a prosteethic leg got caught burgurilizing an ATM. Mike G said that when he got out of prison he could go on "Dancing with the Stars." Mike B said his comment was "brutal."
Golf announcers refer to a player shooting 72 on Sunday (while most of the field is shooting 66, 67) as "being run over."
In the 3rd round of the Masters on Saturday, Tiger Woods snap hooked his tee shot way left and let out with a very loud "GDI." This was the day before Easter.
Bottom line: yes I was offended by all 3 remarks; my fiance has a son hit by a car when he was very young and I really don't want to hear cursing on network TV.
Has anyone apologized for those comments?

Imus has said he cares more about radio than tv. That the tv audience was only about 20-25% of what his radio audience is/was. But certainly being on tv gives you a certain about of elite "clout" that radio can not only bring.
