MSNBC Weekend Programming Question

Why does MSNBC air wall-to-wall prison programming on the weekend?

Does the network have substantial ratings for such programming?

Is this a money issue for the network?

It is highly strange for a news channel that they have no news programming on the weekend.

I know it has been discussed here before, but it seems when notable developing news breaks over the weekend MSNBC is nowhere to be found.

So basically what I am asking is, what reason is MSNBC airing these prison shows?
 
I agree they should have news programming on the weekends, that being said however - at least it's not infomercials.

Regional news channel - NECN (New England Cable News) shows infomercials Saturday and Sunday 1:30PM-5:00PM. If some major happens they'll break in for a few minutes then go right back into the infomercials. They're also not LIVE all the time. You will see at the top of the hour certain times of the day "PREVIOUSLY RECORDED" at the top of the screen. Even if you don't see this there are hints. For example. It could be 2:15PM and they're doing the weather, but the radar they're showing doesn't go past 12:15PM. And if they're covering a breaking news story, you'll often see them come back to the news in mid-segment. (Example when they were covering the various news conference dealing with the recent massive tragedy at the beer warehouse in Connecticut in which a disgruntled employee shot and killed 7 of his coworkers and himself).

I'm sure if something happened that they could tie to a conservative, like a sign at a tea party, MSNBC would drop the prison programming like a rock and go wall to wall.

Because its not true. Just because they aren't wall to wall with an ongoing live program doesn't mean they haven't been there for actual newsworthy events. This might shock you, but they actually do have weekenders working there should live coverage become a must. Fox and CNN re-run stuff all of the time too, to single out MSNBC on it is dumb.

For the same reason FNC re-airs 'best of' segments from Hannity and Glenn Beck, and why CNN reran their "Atlanta Child Murders" special this weekend: They own the content, and its easily profitable to run them again.
 
It really isn't "prison shows" as much as "crime dramas" that MSNBC runs on weekends. These are old NBC prime-time programming, and personally, I find them more interesting than most weekend cable programming. The cost to run these is almost nil. And some of them are very good stories. But, yes, they will break in with important news, if needed. I have no problem with this approach. One thing to keep in mind, nobody runs this type of programming during weekend daytime. I think it is a good move. Not a huge MSNBC fan, but I think they are doing this right.
