MT. WILSON FIRE THREAT?

Hope for the best up there..Pray for more humidity and the marine layer to return. Here is a live shot of Mount Wilson, that is updated very frequently from the National Weather Service Oxnard office. It will occasionally show the transmitters or views towards Mt. Baldy or the L.A. basin. Current shot shows the transmittters covered in thick smoke.
Good luck.

The thick smoke looks just the same over my house, facing Flint Peak... it's just the general conditions this morning.

In all actuality, this thread is as good and, at times, even better that what is being seen and heard. Since Ron Gilmore got on the scene for KNX at 2:30, coverage has been a little (but not much) better. Still playing actualities from yesterday. But, doing better, admittedly, though have heard better.

The interview with the curator of Mt. Wilson Observatory was very good. Lots of communications stuff up there. Also, was interested in the info about the red-white lit stick up there being CBS2. Interesting. Thanks for that. Tower cam showing all smoke, but David's point is well taken -- flames not a problem there, as they said on KNX an hour ago, "Yet ..."

As, when and if you can, keep the info coming. You're doing a great job with info you don't get anywhere else here. Good job and thanks.

From the news conference at 1115AM Sunday Morning

Mt Wilson is still in danger, but not immediate. Expected shift in winds this afternoon could send fire back in that direction.
"Several hundred" fire fighters pre-treating and removing combustibles from around Mt.Wilson facilites. Aircraft, including the DC 10 are pre-treating the ridge system between the fire and Mt.Wilson.

Smoke is starting to clear at the Mt. Wilson site, now that the calvary has finally showed up. Still a lot of flames and smoke on three fronts south of Acton.

After the press conference (I loved how the governor made the order to get these people some information ... NOW! Good for him.) KNX is now (11:35) saying the fire has "come back to life" with huge black smoke plumes a couple of thousand feet high and flames heading for Acton. Says it could come back towards Mt. Wilson in a wind change.

Should be doing "Fire and Weather Together" instead of Traffic ...

Sky 9 is down for now.

Chopper 2 / Sky 9 now up, feeding raw video for CBS Evening News and cable feeds.

98 degrees on the "Miracle Mile" -- up to 104 in other areas of LA. Things heating up.

CBS2.com

KNX Radio now hitting its proud stride with great coverage and less technical errors. Good variety of coverage, stories and inclusion of listeners with their observations.

Even included Sales Manager of the CBS LA cluster.

Now, more "human interest" stories as well as evacuation notices, shelter openings, etc. Nicely done. Very enthusiastic and informative coverage.

Video from Chopper 2 / Sky 9 is awesome, as is the every-two-minute shot from the observatory.

Reports that 20,000+ foot smoke fume can be smelled in Las Vegas, according to a reporter there. Over 3,500 firefighters to be on the scene tonight.

Tim Conway, Jr. doing good and pertinent interviews on his show on KFI right now.

Wondering why with CBS / Sky 9 up, why KNX can't do actualities from the helo, as well as on TV. Have heard it done before.

According to KABC-TV as of 5 p.m. Sunday, fire officials are expecting the fire to make a run to Mount Wilson up to the transmission sites.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has just reported, at 5:12 p.m., that Mount Wilson is in "serious danger" and they expect the flames to reach there by sundown.

That's the good thing that we will in an era of internet and satellite but just the fact that every Local TV and radio station could be knocked off the air is astonishing

I killed my cable TV (damn you, Time Warner Cable and your continuous technical problems) and went digital off-air (much better than cable compression) and web downloads and Apple TV. I actually will be affected if OTA goes down. I would expect that LA has a larger than normal OTA audience due for economic reasons. It will be interesting to see the mobilization for temp facilities if the tower farm goes down.

I think ABC7 just announced that they would stream all their programming on ABC7.com if their transmitter goes down.

Breaking: 5:30. From the command center at Hanson Dam. Wilson, considered a priority, and where they have dropped fire retardant and water all day, but the flames are less than two hours away and Wilson will be impacted, but they hope the retardant and the brush cutting will minimize damage. They are thinking about pulling the fire fighters out now, and hope the retardant and brush cutting will help. In the next hour or two the flames will arrive.

I hope D.E. is right, but I have a bad feeling that the farm is going down. This could be something the likes we haven't seen before.

I think there is more fortification up on Mt. Wilson now with air drops and hundreds of firefighters preparing the ridge to keep the flames at bay, but, who knows at this moment.

Power line disruptions or losses on Mt. Wilson would be a major problem even if the flames didn't get to the tower farm.

Question that came up on KFI: With the switch to TV digital, are all TV stations up there still?

CalFire now reporting at 5:39 p.m. on KNX that Mt. Wilson could be in the thick of it in "two or three hours."(or less) Have strike team up there and working hard to clear the area. David is correct, firefighters are being pulled off the area at this time, hoping that things hold up after the preparation work. Could impact emergency communications as well as broadcast and government transmission facilities. Air preparation will continue in order to "save the operations there."

"Heat driven" not wind driven, but getting fiercer. "Fire has made an advance towards Mt. Wilson" at 5:52 p.m. Prep work and strike crew work continues but safety of firefighters. Direct quote: "It's not a matter of it ... it's a matter of when" Mt. Wilson will be impacted.

Breaking: Red Flag Warning extended into tomorrow (was to lift at 9 p.m.) Also - CBS Chopper 2 assisting in possible rescue action.
