MT. WILSON FIRE THREAT?

Would it be correct to assume that there is insufficient bandwidth available to handle the thousands of people who would be trying to access radio and TV station streams in the event the towers were damaged and stations could no longer broadcast over the air? As far as TV is concerned, would the enormous cable penetration mean those towers could go down and still not affect cable viewing?
 
Looks like KTLA has begun web streaming their programming. I don't think digital cable and internet cable data share the same bandwidth. It should be interesting to see how the sites handle the bandwidth load if the OTA signals are down for a substantial time.
 
Fire crew van or fire truck from a camp reported to have gone over the side in heavy smoke. Chopper 2 in rescue. Dramatic pictures coming in. At least 4 injuries. Rescue at Mt. Gleason, Camp 16 "completely overrun with flames."
 
CBS Chopper 2 enroute to Mt. Wilson with ETA in five minutes from now.

Breaking news:

Chopper 2 pilot Larry Wells (who almost lost his house yesterday due to flames) reports in closed circuit "Mt. Wilson will not be overrun before 7 (p.m.)" and that "It's surrounded ... they'll lose it tonight." Lots of smoke, but no flames expected until dark (2 hours.)

Tankers up at Mt. Luken doing drops.

BREAKING NEWS:

6:26 p.m. "CBS will be the first to go." From Chopper 2 pilot. KABC 7 and KTLA 5 helos also up over Mt. Wilson. KTLA 5 has now put live video online stating it will put all video online. "It has just exploded around here in fire." Winds have now kicked up. KNX calling for its reporter to leave Acton report site as flames come up "the news directors says for you to get out of there."
 
Can anyone confirm that Power 106 is the only Wilson FM to have a backup under the mountain.

KROQ, KYSR, KLAX and KXOL would be the only class B stations to stay on.
 
The ID on the bars and tone with the remote microwave signal on
KCBS-TV's live stream reads:

RM10 KCBS-KCAL OAT MT

Anyone know what "OAT MT" stands for?

It's one of CBS' receive sites for KCBS/KCAL. I'm not sure if they're using it to receive chopper video or ground-based live shots, but there it is.

As for FM backups, I'm pretty sure all of CBS' stations are now backed up at the KROQ site in the Verdugo Mountains. There are a few stations backed up at Flint Peak above Glendale as well.
 
For those with Google Earth, there are some nice info overlays showing the position of the facilites and of course, the terrain in 3d. It looks like the power comes in from the north (there's a straightline clearing) and if that were to go first, would anyone default to backup power (ie, diesel generators self-startup, since the facilities aren't manned) or would they have drained the generators prior to avoid explosions due to heat? A lot of unpleasant choices today.

I am looking at the FCC site. KCBS-FM has multiple backup sites but they all seem to be near Wilson.
 
Exactly which radio stations have transmitters on Mt. Wilson? If these stations are seriously threatened, what would be their backup plans, other than streaming over the net?

Commercial FM's: KHHT, KCBS-FM, KXOS, KTWV, KLOS, KAMP, KKLA, KSWD-FM, KRTH, KSCA, KIIS, KOST, KBIG, KKGO, KPWR, and KLVE.
 
CBS2 live streaming video is back up. Doesn't seem to be from the chopper though, but from a cam set in place that has been slowly moving from east, to west (showing the towers of Mt. Wilson).
 
More on backups:

KCBS-FM does have a licensed Aux at the KROQ/KXOS Verdugo site, as do KTWV and KRTH. KAMP-FM is not licensed for an aux there. I think it has an old aux (that doesn't show in CDBS) at Flint Peak. KPWR, KXOS and KKLA also have auxes at Flint Peak.

Clear Channel was just recently granted aux CPs for KHHT/KIIS/KOST/KBIG at the KYSR Briarcliff site. KSWD and KUSC also have licensed aux sites at Briarcliff.

KLOS has a licensed aux at Mount Harvard, just down the hill from Wilson. I don't think that's going to help much.

There are no aux records I can find for sites other than Mount Wilson for KLVE, KSCA, KKGO or KPCC.
