MT. WILSON FIRE THREAT?

The two super scooper aircraft from Canada have arrived in Van Nuys and will begin work at first light Monday, according to KNX.

I've been told CBS has aux sites for all of their FM's... and CC apparently has a CP for them.

Sounds like this won't be much of an issue if that's the case - other than losing some coverage area in the I.E. or Southern Orange County.

Flames have now reached "the CBS path" at the base of Mt. Wilson according to CBS Chopper 2.

Usually in these situations, isn't the FCC ready to grant reasonable STA's? I mean, if I had an FM in LA and could find someplace to temporarily rig a stick, wouldn't the FCC be pretty lenient about helping them get back on the air?

Latest picture from

http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~obs/towercam.htm

shows possible flames at base of far left x-mitter in photo, unless it's an orange floodlight.
Also possible flames near lower-center part of picture.

Connection is sluggish at best to this site.

this link to the Wilson Observatory isn't working anymore, did it go down?

As mentioned previously , KCBS TV would, from appearances by their chopper pilot, take the first brunt, at this time. Flames are at the base of Mt. Wilson and on the CBS path, moving up.

Interesting views in time lapse video from the LA Times and YouTube:

Breaking News: Channel 2's Justin Yeager reports from Chopper 2 that flames from Mt. Wilson reportedly converging from the north and south flanks and moving up the mountain as of 11 p.m. The site expected now to be overrun, if it gets there, late tonight or in the very early hours of the morning. Flames are heat and fuel driven, not by wind -- though the flames appear to be creating its own wind. "Kickin' up now," in the pilot's words.

Fog and marine layer expected after midnight, a potential air to slow progress and help the fire to lay down according to the NWS.

From my desktop screensaver from last night, it appears to be security light diffusion caught in large smokescreen from your view. Flames are moving up the mountain but have not reached the summit at this time.

Breaking News: 11:18 p.m.

"This is really exploding! Oh my gosh." says Chopper 2 pilot Justin Yeager. Amazing live feed at CBS2 / KCAL web site right now. "Really into hot stuff right there." Appears to be moving east, not up, according to the chopper pilot.

All stations appear to be transmitting normally. Let's see if that's the case when I wake up tomorrow morning.
Even if they weren't you probably wouldn't notice in the basin if they are on backups at Flint Peak or in the Hollywood Hills.

Either KCBS has struck oil, or there's a fire on the ridge behind the towers (a half mile away).

Looking again and playing with the picture, that spot is so perfectly atop the auxiliary tower that I think you are right. It looks like a flare up on the ridge behind the towers, maybe a half mile away. Good call. The flame (and it is) is right at the top of that little tower. The security light is down a lot further after checking.

Not at my location in the Inland Empire. Kellogg Hill shields the view. Reception from KROQ on Flint and KCRW on Mount Lee is spotty at my location for this reason.

Just found this site. I'm in Tennessee and no news coverage on any of the cable news channels..getting all info from the LA TV internet sites. All the cable news has is recorded junk! Too bad Ted Turner sold out...he would have crews on the spot and broadcasting the fire news 24/7! CNN headline news is a tabloid news station! Checked out LA talk radio internet sites and zelch on any live coverage or emergency info! Talk about not serving the community! Keep those ad dollars on informercials coming in !!!! Would an earthquake change things?

That's why I said the basin. I was specifically talking about the basin and key parts of the L.A. metro.
