MT. WILSON FIRE THREAT?

Five minute Estimated Time of Arrival inbound. (now, 3:56 p.m.)

Plane is there now, circling. Gaining altitude at the 605 & 210.

Bingo! Beautiful shot!

Nice drop at 4:15 p.m.

I'm sure the ones with backup sites have shut off their Mt Wilson Xmtrs because of the Smoke affect on the ventilation. I know I would not want that smoke filled air moving thru a transmitter or generator. If you or I were chief and had the option to shut down I would. Can’t run up there and change the filters daily either right now.

For those with a closed system the A/C efficacy would be affected with the smoke and heat. Its a no win situation unless you can shut down and ride it thru from a aux site.

At this point, I'd be more concerned with water damage after that bullseye shot!

There is scheduled to be another "Flying Boat" dump on Mt. Wilson at 5:15 p.m PST. Plane has reloaded and is reported to be enroute.

Supposedly, Castaic was too smoky, so reload was done back at Lake Elsinore.

Second drop was just made. Looked perfect. (5:20 p.m. PST)

Flint Peak, between Glendale and Pasadena, north of Eagle Rock. Don't know power, but likely pretty high. That is the emergency site for Salems KKLA too... as well as a couple of others.

A sincere thank you to every poster who contributed something of value to this thread.

Your information was very revealing, your questions interesting and your help with links, pictures, video feed info, reactions, etc. made this a most valueable resource.

Hopefully, it kept those of us who care about this industry in touch.

Thanks to the posters from outside California who cared about the extraordinary events that are still playing out here in the Southladn.

And most of all, thanks to the professional broadcasters, pilots, reporters, videographers, field staffs, engineers, tech support, site staffs and especially -- to CalFire, LA Fire, LA PD, CHP and the 3500 plus firefighters -- particularly two brave men who gave their lives in the tireless efforts to bring this monster fire under control.

It will happen. Their work was not in vain. Our prayers, thoughts and condolences from this large group of interested broadcasters and friends to their families.

Many many residents give thanks for the hard work in what has been termed, ironically, "The Station Fire", though, certainly, it didn't start the way we saw it until this event at Mt. Wilson.

Of course, many radio and television broadcasters pause in thanks for the outcome, at least as it stands at venerable Mt. Wilson this night. We thank those who gave the information and kept us up to date.

And congratulations to those at America's premier astronomical observatory, at Mt. Wilson. May this institution live for another century of progress and revelation as a great treasure of our nation. Messrs. Hale and Hubble are, too, very proud of the efforts made these past few days, I am sure.

A lot of people spent a lot of time on this thread. You are to be commended. Thank you very much.

Regards,

David,

From back east (Buffalo, NY) sincere thanks to the posters who've made contributions to this thread and given us updates on the efforts and progress of the fire fighters. To the families of the two firemen who lost their lives, our condolences. Two Buffalo firemen lost their lives last week in a fire and their deaths were felt by the entire community. These brave, selfless men and women often "enter" the flames while most of us are fleeing for our lives. This thread has performed a service to many of us who seek updates and served as a valuable news source. Thanks.

And two STA's.

Encouraging news..fire last reported at 22% containment. Moisture from Jimena these next few days could help slow the fire. Just hope the afternoon thunderstorms provide some rain, not dry lightning.
