MTV Question

I was at a party on New Years Eve. And a few people mentioned back in the early 90's. MTV (vj's) were in a video, that was like Naughty By Natures "OPP". Something like "Down With MTV". So far I've found nothing. Is this true? Was there an actual video made?

There was a daily afternoon program called "Hangin' With MTV", which I guess could be compared to today's "FN MTV".

As far as MTV personalities in music videos, all I have on my radar is a cameo from Tabitha Soren in the Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right" video.

I agree 100% now it's a waste of bandwidth. The complete network of it's brother's and sister's is a complete loss.they should rename it RTV for Reality TV.

The song came out in 1986/early 1987, I think I do remember seeing Soren in it but I think it would be a few years before she actually joined MTV. I think she was working part-time in TV in either Vermont ( WCAX ? ) or upstate New York around this time. However within a few short years Tabitha Soren joined MTV News to became ( along with Chris Baron of the Spin Doctors, Dan Cortesse from MTV Sports and those Burger King commercials, and tennis great Andre Agassi ) as the "voices of generation X". Everytime it seemed when some magazine or TV show wanted to do a story about the "X" generation, at least two of those people were always included in the discussion. Sometimes with funny results like the time when Nike spent millions on an ad campaign called "Rock & Roll tennis" and they featured shots of Agassi. The thing was Agassi didn't like rock music very much.

Funny how those "voices of generation X", today are pretty much nothing more than answers to trivia questions.

I also have this question!!

Total waste of bandwidth,NOTHING BUT GARBAGE!!

I posted a me$$age on MTV's feedback message base and within minutes it was deleted ;D (Guess they cant stand the truth being posted)

I see someone posted on that MTV board to bring music back. I agree with that too. Bring back music. And I like how they said change the name of MTV. A good one would be Date TV as they have all shows like Next, X Factor, Parent Control. And yeah sure I watch some of these shows but they need to show music also. As that is what MTV stands for MTV - Music Television. Same with VH-1 you guys are Video Hits First.

So who was the last legitimate VJ on MTV?

And VH1, as well. That network is basically now a printing press for ill-gotten funds for Cris Abrego.

I liked the Denis Leary ad campaign around that time, too. Clearly, he's had staying power than those aforementioned in the above quote... especially Tabitha. She literally dropped off the face of the earth, it seems! I half-expect her to show up out of the blue and start doing news updates for MSNBC at some point...

Wouldn't it be cheaper to show videos then to air tv shows and produce them? I could be wrong. Maybe it has to do with ratings or something.

at least vh1 still plays early morning music video's, mtv plays no music at all

Nope, infact cost is what caused MTV to go away from music to begin with.

When MTV started they had a agreement with the RIAA. MTV didn't have to pay anything for airing the music, because it was basically a promotional tool. Around the time of thriller however that agreement ended, and MTV with its high rating had to pay alot for the music. So MTV started a 2 songs/5 minutes of commerical block format. However ratings started to fal, thus MTV started to add shows like remote control, and such to help with ratings. Also to help music was more organized. No longer MTV just aired videos like a radio station. Now mtv would break music into hourly themed shows, such as most requested, club mtv, ect. MTV also started to air rap with yo mtv raps. Anyway things were ok for a while, but mtv hit ratings gold with the real world. As the years went by ratings for music went down, the RIAA wanted more money, but they had real world, and road rules, so mtv just added more and more reailty programing. Music was aired during off-peak hours. They pay so much depending on how many people are watching, thus 6:00AM was a cheaper time to air music videos, then 6:00PM. Same reason vh1 classics started to ditch the 24/7 music format once more cable systems started to pick them up, and they became a popular network.

Anyway, long story short, the greedy music industry is what ruined the original mtv. Uncreative executives are what ruined and killed the 2nd phase mtv of the early-mid 90's, and the internet is what killed the final music during the early hours, and trl version of mtv.

Somehow "Corporate greed killed the video star" doesn't hold the same aura as "Video killed the radio star".

MTV Hits plays music videos 24/7 most of the time, and Vh1 Classic still plays a fair amount each day, usually up until about 3 or 4 PM. And they just had that everlasting "2009 for 2009" music video marathon. I would imagine the main reason for them doing that was to give all their employees a vacation, so they had everything all cued up.

How could MTV ( and the others ) compete with You Tube?

Other than the recent Warner situation, it seem ( at least to me anyway ) rare have I heard about some music video being yanked off that site over copyright violationsunlike so many other things that have popped up on You Tube, even though I have heard about clips that were taken from shows like Soul Train and American Bandstand that were taken off for that very reason. Actually Dick Clark Productions I know are very touchy about any of their stuff appearing on You Tube, not only going after You Tube but even going as far as contacting ( with not so nice emails ) those who had uploaded the clip in the first place.

Here's a great way to save money on producing an episode of MTV's Parental Control

Parents hate daughter's boyfriend

Parents tell daughter they are not allowed to date him or anyone else and if she disobeys, then ground her.

End of show.

mtv hits gets low enough ratings that royalties costs are within what mtv is getting from cable companies. Same with vh1 soul, and mtv jams. However vh1 classics, while not fully gone like mtv2 (which use to be basically what mtv hits is until it was popular enough to start getting put on basic cable) is on the same path mtv2 was a few years ago, and vh1 was about 10 years ago. vh1 classics up until around 2005 was all music. Up until 2007 had full time vj's. Now while they still have good music blocks, they air movies, vh1 reruns, music docs, ect. I say within 5 years vh1 classics will basically be vh1's version of mtv2. However at that time they will probably launch mtc classics.
