MTV Video Music Awards shorter than usual

I just checked the TV schedule, and it appears that MTV's coverage of the VMAs will not be what it once was. This year, they're doing the Pre-show for an hour, which starts at 8pm. Then the actual ceremony starts at 9pm, which, this year, is only lasting for 2 hours, instead of 3. I really wish it could go back to the old way. Why are they doing this?

It used to be that the VMA pre-show was 90 minutes, the Awards themselves 3 hours or more, and the wrapup show 30 minutes or less.

The same sort of irrelevancy that resulted in MTV moving TRL from 5 pm to 1 pm weekdays over the last 7 years is also behind the VMAs' total airtime being truncated from 5 hours to 3½.

Who really cares.
1. MTV never, hardly ever, shows videos.
2. It is just another useless awards show.
