I can attest that the show started in the early 1990's, believe it or not. In fact, I want to say 1990.

As far as season lengths, maybe they're like British sitcoms - six episodes apiece.

Seasons of cable series tend to be shorter than that on the networks -- in a given year, a cable program could have two or even three new seasons in a single year. For example: both "Cake Boss" and "Pawn Stars" began in 2009, yet they are in their fourth seasons. And TLC's "Police Women" series began in 2009, yet its SIXTH season will start next month.

MTV started airing the Real World in 1992 as a 30 minute program, and the earlier seasons generally lasted between 22 and 24 episodes, including the cast reunions, etc. They aired one season per year in the beginning. I believe it was after season 13, Paris, that they started to air 2 seasons per calendar year, and also moved to the format of 1 hour shows with a 13 episode 'season'.
