multiband webcast proceessing suggestions

At the risk of sounding like some crazy cheerleader, this is my favorite setting so far. My Dorrough loudness meters don't show as much compression (peak to average), and I like the more open-ness, which I've always thought gives you more punch, leaving more dynamics thru (I'm listening on an Echo MIA, using analog balanced outs). Whoever was missing the bass before, well there it is now (Lionel Richie's "You are" displays that very well). My ears tell me most of the action (compression/limiting) is taking place on the low end, while the mids and highs are treated much more gently. If that is the case, that is what I normally prefer too. It just keeps getting better. Can it get any better? I agree with you Robert - adjusting processing is both a joy and pain.

oooops, I've been playing with it while you're listening. ;)

Yes, I heard that. That's the way this works right ;). 10:16 PM CDT. Not sure what changes you made, but I still think it sounds great. The Madonna "Holiday" is a good test song too. I'm monitoring on JBL Centruy L100s, JBL 4410's, and other varieties of systems. Although my reference is still my SONY 7506's. Personally I would prefer to hear a little of the fade, but that's just me.

Hang on and I'll post my settings in a bit.

UPDATE

It's basically Rustonium with the following two changes:

I lowered the level input just a bit, as I may have been over-driving it. I also changed the HPF from 30 Hz to 45 Hz.

The rolloff is set at 11

Peak ref level - 3.0 dB
final drive +0.0 dB
Range is 47 (trying to preserve the fade out)
Power 50
Speed 50
Bass normal
Bass shape 0

I don't know about anyone else, but this sounds amazing to me. I had my headphones on during Christopher Cross's "Ride like the wind." I know that song inside and out, and it sounded perfect when it played. I have played Human League "Don't you want me" on the radio when it first came out, and hundreds of times after that, along with hearing it blasted in clubs. Again, I know that song inside and out, and the spectral balance I think is/was perfect. I thought I could catch some of SNL, but you've got me glued for a little while longer. Thanks for taking the fade into consideration.

You're welcome! :)

I should also mention that every song I am feeding into Breakaway is a PCM WAV file. No MP3's are in use for the music. The only MP3 file in use is that top of the hour station ID.

Can't get any better than that. No wonder why I rarely listen to my tuners anymore, we have streams like yours that can sound amazingly clean, without all of the interference that plagues OTA radio. I have an older vehicle, and am amazed what I will tolerate when listening to the radio in the way of interference, but at home, it's a different story. I will usually go for the radio station's stream as a first choice. Keep up the good work Robert. I can see you have a great set of ears.

Reminds me of when I ran an 80's/90's format with an 8100 with the California Digital cards in it, just a little more laid back.

Bass sounds good. Could use a little (just a little) bit more mids... like a small (again very small) bump around 800Hz just to bring the vocals up a bit. The ear is the most sensitive to this range (speech) and a small boost, maybe 1.5dB, can lift the vocals up in a mix.

What are your levels going in to the encoder? It's a bit quiet compared to some other streams I'm running at -6dBfs.

EdCast meters are hanging around the -15 area. Once I am totally satisfied with the processing settings, I can kick up the levels going into EdCast.

What did you think of the Motor City preset?

On that one now as of 11:57 PM. Didn't stay on it long though.

OK the current contestant is Zenith at 12:42 AM. And on that note, it's my bedtime.

The dynamic on bass seems stronger and more open.
Sounded really good on the Stray Cats' "Rock This Town".

In case they aren't in your version, there are a number of Obsolete Presets in Breakaway that are fun to play with as well. In the Breakaway Live Program Files, locate the breakawaylive.ini file and find the word "Master" in the file (CTRL+F will take you to it). Insert this text under the "Master" line : ObsoletePresets=1 . Numerous obsolete presets will be added, some of which have healthy doses of downward expansion that will make the above mentioned audible AGC go away. I've primarily used them on BBP, but they can be added on both versions. I've used Twente OB and Rusticity 83 OB with some delight. For the "open" sound, I find myself running the Speed at 0 frequently, sometimes wishing it could go even slower. Amazing processing for the minimal money. Leif says there's a new version of Breakaway coming but no timetable has been announced.

I keep hearing that, but I seriously doubt it... It is more (much more) than one year overdue since Leif promised the new version. I fear (but certainly not hope) it will be added to the list of great but abandoned software. Nevertheless I still love it.

Still enjoying the feedback guys, thank you!

At the moment, Zenith is looking like a good choice. I like the openness and transparency of this preset, which really was my initial goal. The only additional sound I'd might like to see is just a small touch of reverb. Anyone else have any thoughts on reverb?
