Multiple shootings in Mesa -- Only Channel 12 covers the story

KPNX aired live coverage from beginning to what looks like the end now (they caught the guy at about 12:30). The other stations pretty much ignored the story other than during their regular newscasts. 3, 10, and 15 aired decent coverage when they aired anything, but 5 ran their normal newscast, including weather and a jobs ad.

I'll bet that if the perp was an attractive woman (see: Jodi Arias) instead of a 40-something white bald ex-con with neck tattoos, all the stations would have been wall-to-wall with it.

Six people getting shot, one dead, with a good portion of a large city under lockdown, should be a higher priority than the regular houswife-drivel that our local stations air in the mid-morning. All the stations other than 12 should be ashamed of themselves, but Channel 5 has the most egg on its face since they didn't even stick with it during their noon news.

Jody Arias is attractive? But I digress.....

Why should a station stay with a story which does not have continuing activity? After the initial shootings and the car jacking the police locked down surrounding areas and were hunting for the perp. What is to cover during this time other than a lot of speculation? Last week the entire morning show on channel 10 was devoted to speculation and anticipation on the outcome of the Arias sentence trial. 3+ hours of pure wasted time.

By all means, come on-air if there is something to report but if the only purpose is to recap what has already happened and get your newsroom in front of the camera it is not the best use of time (even though I would not defend regular programming in this time slot either).

Nothing like giving some nutbag his 15 minutes of fame on local television.
I applaud all the stations EXCEPT KPNX for denying the idiotic shooter in Mesa
his time on local television. Once the ordeal is over, then I can appreciate
good coverage........
