Mumford & Sons on Star94

[Note-content removed per TOS.]

Star 94 is one of the last Hot AC's in the country to add Mumford & Sons - it's #13 right now on the Hot AC chart - and they were one of the last Hot AC's in the country to add Imagine Dragons and Lumineers

Scott Lindy gave it a change in direction, all right - more and more conservative, even tighter recurrent playlist, etc. - and the same tired gold tracks over and over - Live Like We're Dying, "Wanted" by Jessie James, "I Want You" by Savage Garden, all for the 300th time

And the constant taglines assuming all listeners are married women with kids make me embarassed that I'm listening and want to change the station

I think this is very typical in markets where a format isn't covered 100% by a station. Popular songs or artists from another genre show up on a similar format, whether it's country on AC or alternative on HAC. In NYC, there is no country station. But popular artists like Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Hunter Hayes, and others get airplay on LiteFM. Consequently, those songs or artists show up on airplay charts in other genres, and it broadens the audience base for that artist. Sometimes a label will promote songs or artists to other formats. That's what happened to Taylor Swift and the Jason Aldean/Kelly Clarkson duet. But other times, it's done by the station simply recognizing that a song from another genre fits their format and audience. That's why I said in another thread that the concept for hard radio formats like CHR have been weakening in the last 5-10 years.

Of course they don't have to add Alternative material as quickly, but you're making a pretty big assumption that WAITING on Alt/AAA-leaning stuff is going to result in higher ratings, and if you notice, Star is currently losing to both Q100 and B98.5

In many markets without a AAA and/or Alternative, the Hot AC can pick up those tracks exclusively and get all that additional audience that can't find a AAA/Alt station

Of course they have a choice - right now, they're playing less than half the tracks on the Hot AC chart, with a ridiculously tight recurrent/gold playlist, and they're losing to Q100 and B98.5

Take a look at the Mediabase Hot AC chart - there are tons of titles they could add that aren't rhythmic-leaning, some of which are Top 20 (and still being ignored) - or, they could broaden the recurrents and golds like B98.5 does

WMYI/Greenville has a nice gold/recurrent selection for a Hot AC (they don't play much pre-2000s), but their ratings are really slipping, so that might not be such a smart idea...

I hate to hear this, because Star 94 sounded really good when I listened a year or so ago.

IMO here's the situation - B98.5 is killing Star - Lindy is apparently assuming that the reason people are listening to B98.5 is because unfamiliar tracks turn them off - whereas, the real reason B98.5 could be winning is because people like the huge variety in their recurrent/gold playlist

Q100 and Power have also pulled ahead of Star, and that could be because Q and Power play a higher percentage of new music

Star is stuck in the middle of boring and more boring, and IMO they have to make a decision to be more aggressive either with new music or with old music
