mundofox Houston

I came across an ad for a General Sales Manager for KUVM MundoFox in Houston.

I also saw a launch date of August 13th. With a launch that close you would think they would be making more noise about their affiliations in other markets.

KUVM was on Comcast when the station carried Azteca America, but has been gone since KYAZ picked up the affiliation.

FOX has to be extremely annoyed that its new network wound up on a LPTV in a huge Hispanic market such as Houston.

If Comcast doesn't pick it up, will anybody be able to see it? KUVM has such limited coverage. Still annoyed that Retro TV is on this station too. Didn't KUVM apply for a power boost?

Yes and no. One reason you find so many spanish language networks on LPTV stations is that a lot of spanish speaking households do not subscribe to cable or satellite. My hunch is that they'll reach most of the spanish speaking market in Houston with that station.

I'm surprised it didn't end up on a subchannel of KRIV. KUVM-CD is extremely weak, and I seriously doubt it will reach a lot of households on that station.

IIRC-- Fox has a phobia about digital subchannels. None of their owned Fox network stations have digital subchannels.

They have Bounce on several of their stations, and have signed KIN for several more, plus MundoFox will be on a Fox subchannel in DC. And they're adding AccuWeather, not sure if it will be a subchannel or online-only.

I was hoping FOX would put the new MundoFOX channel on the sub-channels over Most FOX/MyTV stations they currently own.

Not to be a stickler... But I said they do not have subchannels on "their owned Fox network stations." They do have duopolies where a co-owned non-Fox affiliate may have digital subchannels, but the station that carries Fox network has none.

I wonder why that is. Certainly it can't be picture quality. After all, Murdoch originally wanted to use the digital spectrum for four(!) 480i broadcasts, until some of our heroes in D.C. threatened to pull it from him if he didn't embrace 720p or 1080i.

I think you have them confused with CBS. But due to the technology they use, Fox-owned stations have quite limited bandwidth for subchannels, enough for one SD subchannel (but no more unless their bandwidth requirements are very low), or two M/H subchannels. So it's not surprising to see Fox looking elsewhere for MundoFox affiliates.

Trip will likely chime in with more (better) info, but I've heard of at least one Fox station that uses their limited spare bandwidth for subscription-only M/H channels (Fox News and Fox Business, IIRC). Perhaps that's the direction they're going with their network affiliates.

KDFW used to have weather radar on 4.2 several years ago; more recently they had a M/H simulcast of the main 4.1 channel, although that too seems to have either disappeared or been encrypted.

Then why couldn't it have gone on KTXH? It's co-owned with KRIV.

Maybe I'm not seeing something, but KUVM-CD seems like a horrible choice to launch a major network in such a large city. I'm near Meyerland and that signal is very difficult for me to pick up. It's not impossible here, but I'm probably closer to the transmitter than most people in the city, and I'm willing to bet that it is impossible in most areas. They will have to rely on cable carriage.

Why would Fox make a deal with Mako for weak little KUVM-CD when they already own two full power stations (KRIV and KTXH)? That just makes no sense to me.

They've done that elsewhere as well. Does anyone know where MundoFox is not on the .1 channel? That's the only reason I could come up with: they wanted MundoFox on the primary subchannel, even if it's on an LPTV station, but didn't want to bump their MyNetworkTV station from the primary position. Just a guess.

I suspect they'll be able to get cable carriage even for a Class A station. After all, they're Fox. But more interestingly, KUVM-CA has a construction permit for a new antenna that will significantly increase their coverage:

Current coverage

New coverage

KFWD/52 in DFW is also supposed to be increasing their coverage, so it looks like MundoFox is putting in the resources they need to get the most out of their affiliates.

Why KTXH 20:3 is carrying MundoFOX in SD, when channel 45 was suppose to be in SD on channel 20, why is KXLN is on 67:2 when it's suppose to be 61:1 in SD on 67:2?

I'm puzzled by what you wrote. I also believe that I probably speak for everyone on the board.

They are apparently living in a fantasy world where certain Houston UHF stations are located on the wrong channel, or with the wrong network affiliation. In another thread someone pointed out they may be the same person who had vandalized a number of Wikipedia articles with similar gibberish.
