Murphy in the morning is gone!

In the comments section of the New & Record's article, Murphy is getting raked over the coals. Apparently, for many there, he will not be missed.

nuffsaid: morning drive not as important as it used to be?
ok. what took it's place? what daypart is MORE important
than it used to be...and by how much more?
just curious, that's all.

Amos, You have a good point. Why would they fire only Murphy and not get rid of the entire morning show crew? The dispute was between Murphy and Brice Wheeler. Also, they need someone to take over the slot until they syndicate the NEW morning show which should be in place right before the next ratings book. So listen and learn! The new syndicated morning show coming soon OR look for a format change. Another hispanic station. "Hot Nachos 107.5" We work for chips! lol lol For English....Press Uno. lol lol lol

This is no stunt! Bruce Whller may be stupid but Allen Dick is not! Murphy has long since been a thorn in the side of KZL and it was time for him to move on to something other than mornings at KZL. I would have liked to have seen him have a chance to retire and move on gracefully but we all know that is not the way it is done in our business. Believe it or not, Jack did some spectacular things during his years at the station and was a good morning man. Why not give some credit where credit is due?

I never really liked Murphy, but even I have to admit he had a good run, made a lot of money for WKZL, and was a fixture in this market for many, many years. This was a sad ending for him. He was able to draw an older demographic to KZL that kept them up in the ratings. This may not be a great move for them.

i REALLY thought this was a stunt. maybe not, though.

on his facebook page, murphy posted this:

My attorney got an email today from Dick Broadcasting company's attorney saying they have a a Service Mark on "Murphy in the Morning". A name I used at WHTZ New York, WROQ Charlotte, WLTE Minneapolis, WIDE 106 Atlanta, WSTR Atlanta, KKLQ San Diego, KHYI Dallas, and for the Last 20 years here in the Triad.

what a conundrum this puts me in.
1) when did he work at WROQ? i've heard for years that he claims to be THE murphy in the morning, which in fact is robert murphy -- who went to chicago. i never believed he was claiming that, thinking that people just ASSUMED it was him. well, he's NOT robert murphy. so, did he work at WROQ, calling himself "murphy in the morning" at some OTHER time than robert murphy?
2) so he was at WSTR atlanta? he was the "murphy" of "murphy and mckeever?" talk about a train wreck! absolutely WORST show ever. it sounded like two guys that had NO clue what to do. oh, and he didn't call himself "murphy in the morning" then. they MAY have said "murphy & mckeever in the morning" some, but mostly just "murphy & mckeever." they sucked canal water, and lasted NO time. they were out almost as fast as they appeared. (they were the first morning show after the format change to hot ac, and call letter change from WQXI-FM to WSTR.
3) WWID? really?

i want to like the guy. but this leaves me doubting my judgement.

Hi Amos,

Jack Morphy DID work at WROQ in 1985. He was the second morning show after WROQ flipped from Album Rock to Top 40 in 1984 (Trivia note: Larry Sprinkle, the one that actually worked with Robert Murphy, was the first morning show during WROQ's CHR era, but that's another topic). IIRC, He was replaced by J.J. McKay sometime in 1985 when Jack Murphy went to Z100/NY to work with Scott Shannon. And believe it or now, Jack Murphy came back to 95.1 during the WAQQ incarnation in 1992 to do mornings where he made a remark about being a "cousin" to Robert Murphy, which led Robert to issue a C&D on Jack for that remark. Jack explained to the trades at the time that it was just a off-the-cuff remark and not a running bit. Strangely enough (OK, not so strange) Jack left for KZL at about that time, where he was there for 20 years.

As far as Jack trademarking "Murphy In The Morning", the only time that I've ever heard that "Murphy In The Morning" was trademarked was when Robert Murphy did it back in the 80s while at WKQX/Chicago. I don't know if Robert's trademark on the name has since lapsed allowing Jack Murphy to trademark the name for himself or what, but Jack's comment about being THE "Murphy In The Morning" for all of those stations that he had worked at smells foul. And BTW, I have it on good authority that Jack was NOT known as "Murphy In The Morning" while he was at Z100. The morning show at that time was known as "The Z Morning Zoo with Shannon and The Murph'". Same with WROQ, the morning show was "The Q Morning Zoo" (There is, or was, an clip of Jack at WROQ in early 1985 at www.thatwasradio.com in the WROQ section that proves it.).

wow, robyn. that's something. i'm suprised that 'roq would ALLOW him to use "murphy in the morning" after robert murphy.

i think my old friend boo barron did mornings at 'roq sometime around that same time. maybe reggie blackwell programming then. boo did mornings at 15Q knoxville in 76 and at kiss-102 charlotte when they came on (with mike beach).

Hi Amos,

As far as I know, Jack Murphy didn't use "Murphy In The Morning" while at WROQ. They've already paid the licensing to use "Morning Zoo" and wasn't about to drop it.

As for Boo Barron, I believe he was in mornings at WROQ-FM by late 1986-early 1987 after JJ McKay went to a station in Springfield, MO (before coming back to do afternoons at WBCY in 1987). Boo's stint was short-lived as Blaine Kellis and Chris Williams took over mornings by Spring.

And, yes, Reggie Blackwell was WROQ's PD by that point.

Robyn

WOW good memories. Jack Murphy was indeed on 95QQ in the spring of 92, but lasted no time. he was the replacement for the short lived Buc Naked and Shelby Sweeny <SP> show that started out in Jan of 92. 95QQ went through a lot of morning shows in it's short history and Murph was one of the most boring shows I ever listened to... For some reason when I listened to him on KZL before moving away to IL he was doing pretty darn good and was a pretty good listen... CC1

i listened to one of his podcasts, but i haven't tuned in to the live show yet.

it appears to be him and his wife, michelle.
