MURPHY VS. SHOWGRAM

D

This deserved a fresh thread. As previously discussed, the Showgram looks like it's coming to 105.7, setting up the highly-anticipated Murphy vs. Dumas battle. These two HATE each other (probably because they are SO alike). All Access blurbed that the Murphy show will soon be syndicated to "several" markets and one of them is (reportedly) a new CHR in NC.

We'll see

Wasn't Murphy syndicated at one time to seven stations? And failed miserably? ::)

I can't really see these two shows working outside their home markets. Especially the showgram. That show is just not syndicated material.

I hope this comes and goes soon, one way or another.

Cant you pick up G-105 in most of the Triad anyway??? Randi seems pretty safe in the CC new world order. I'm sure she'll try to take care of her own...The stations are getting watered down, generic "Premium Choice" content the rest of the day...why not more watered down, generic content in AM Drive??? As for KZL and Murphy...Hows' Dick doin with the 2 Guys named Chris syndication? I still cannot believe CC never took a real morning show against them.

That's what is so frustrating right now: Matt Pencola is the right talent, but they won't promote him or give him any tools to beat R92.

They simulcasted with Wilmington, it only lasted about a year.

considering the TONS of complaints that come in from greensboro listeners about not being able to pick up g105 since they moved to the old WLFL tower...this is a plus....G105 is not listenable past about kernersville or so heading west...and with 105.7's tower being where it is...it puts a VERY listenable signal deep into charlotte but breaks up badly past burlington heading east...the HD barely stays on lock in greensboro as it is now. either way..its more $$$$ for showgram....thats all it breaks down to anyway.

Not very classy or even funny. Is this typical of the show? I guess the John-Boy and Billy people might like this. Sounds like a clone of John-Boy. Big question is since he is not on yet in Greensboro why does he think the people in Raleigh would care about this. If I was listening to this in Raleigh I would have turned the dial. Took 10 minutes to do a 2 minute bit. JMHO.

That audio was good for a couple of reasons
1) His audience in Raleigh that loves this show is happy to see it expand to other markets, especially a nearby one, which some of them drive through on occasion/all the time.
2) It's part of a psychologial war with Murphy In the Morning. This is classic CHR morning radio where you're out waging an all out war by making fun of your competition. Ever heard of the old Power 93 The Power Pig vs. Q-105 Tampa in the very late 80s/early 90s? How about Z-100 vs Power 95 New York in the 80s?

I will say this though. I had a chance to listen to a bit of Murphy In The Morning the other day making fun of Lady Gaga. It was a pretty funny bit and I enjoyed it. At the same time, I'm also enjoying the best of the Bob Showgram currently airing on 105.7 Hit Music Now.
I'm glad to see both shows expanding to other markets as I think they both have something to offer.

I used to like Jack but his age is starting to show and he gets too hung up on fat people. I grew up on Howard Stearn, Z100, WPLJ etc... Jack move on... A lot of your co-host talent like Josh and Josie are just funnier than you. When it comes to Fat People... Looks like somebodys been hitting the Village Tavern menu a little hard. I really like the showgram hands down.

So, let's go with the predictions.

I don't see Dumas and crew making that big a splash in the Triad, mainly because CC isn't promoting much of ANYTHING these days. Maybe they will take away 15% of Murphy's listeners. 20% MAX. BUT THAT'S SIGNIFICANT because it allows the Simon guys to make up some ground (assuming Showgram doesn't take some of their listeners and it might). The wildcard is the performance royalty bill: If it's passed, CC might decide that music on 105.7 is too expensive a proposition and they might go talk or sports.

the showgram might not climb to the top of the triad ratings, but they might be significant in part because G105 used to put a strong signal into the market before they moved closer to Raleigh.

Will there be any small changes to the format of the showgram? For example, they might need a new phone number to shout out besides 860-1051, or [email protected]. They do a lot of interviews with people who come to the Raleigh area and give away a ton of restaurant, movie, and show passes to Raleigh events. Will this remain more or less unchanged or will they scale back on some of this? I'm guessing the studio audience on Friday will still continue -- with people from Greensboro who want to come can just drive the extra distance.

What else is WMKS airing? I've never had any reason to listen. Will the rest of the day be automated, or have they already started putting in some content (Seacrest? Randi?)

They are a jukebox right now, but Seacrest would be logical for the future

I would expect Dumas to do wacky street stunts in Greensboro to announce his presence. I like the throwback to the old deejay wars. It shows that somebody gives a damn and wants to compete.

I agree. Competition is good for radio and good for the listeners. It makes the personalities work harder to be better. As long as both of these guys have been around, it's easy to get complacent. I'm sure they are both pumped up about the challenge and it will freshen their shows. This is great for our market.

So what happened on day 1? Did Bob call out the Murf or what? Details...
