Didn't know this but Murray was a class act. I had a talk with Charlie Goodrich sometime back about WIFE. Charlie services McMartin products. He was on the engineering staff at WIFE years ago.
I only worked with Murray briefly, he was a great engineer who was very good at explaining technical stuff. I remember learning about AM directional patterns from him.
There was no one like Murray. He managed the sound when the Beatles played at the State Fair Grounds. He made do with bailing wire and duct tape when there was no money in the budget for transmitter repairs. He built an automation system for WMLF when the GM didn't want to spend money. Murray even put Jay Johnson in his place at WTLC when Jay deserved it. Murray will be missed.
I was a snot-nosed part-timer kid working at the station who made "sloppy mistakes" in the log book in the beginning. Murray called me out and called me in, asking me if I wanted to do things the RIGHT way. Scared the hell out of me, but my fear turned into incredible respect as he was so willing to teach so long as he knew that I wanted to learn, and I learned a lot. He was an innovative old-school class act...
