Music again on WGUY

While in Ellsworth today I was able to tune in WGUY AM-1230 from Bangor. It was great to hear them playing "oldies" , the type of music I associate with WGUY. Way to go "Big Guy" !

Just playing for right now. Trying to work out arrakis systems headaches. This is a labor of love, but will eventually be on full time
Dan

WGUY was a daytimer on 1250. Prior to that, it had been on 1230. Prior to that, believe it or not, 1450 or 1490. I've been told both. Suffice it to say, was on 14 something, moved to 1230 when Bangor's 4th am went dark. Later move from 1230 to 1250 allowed 1230 to go to Belfast as WBME

That site is most likely correct. I wanted to say wj something that went away, and wguy moved to their 1230. 1 of those 2 class 4 transmitted from what today is ch 2 on Mount Hope Ave. I once saw dx reception reports of these frequencies.

Interesting....I would assume that they left full time operation on 1230 to become a daytimer on 1250??? Better daytime coverage....but seems like a weird decision! Any idea who they had to protect on 1250?

Mel Stone later said a mistake. Then believed future of radio daytime, TV at night. Later years had pre and post authorization(s). While I do not remember who in particular, Manchester NH and Ware MA both had 1250 assignments, and 1260 was in New Brunswick, Fredericton or nearby

Dan, not to change the subject, but do you still have Alan Colmes on any of your stations? Used to enjoy listening to him on the drive home.

I remember when WGUY was on 1250 back in the '70s. Its transmitter was in a marshy field out on Route 15 going toward Glenburn --- beyond the back side of Broadway Hill, where WLBZ (WZON)'s massive tower "Bertha" dominates the Bangor skyline. WGUY was a great little station in its heyday,
but it couldn't be heard to the south or west more than 20 miles or so outside the city.

The station quickly lost most of its listenership when the Rines/Thompson clan (Maine Broadcasting), which owned WLBZ, decided to switch WLBZ's format to Top 40. They did a talent raid on WGUY and hired most of the station's DJs for considerably more lucrative salaries than they had been receiving.
That was around 1978, IIRC; for several years thereafter, WLBZ was the dominant AM station in central, eastern, and a goodly chunk of northern Maine.

Whatever became of some of those jocks on 'GUY? Jack Dalton, Bob Diamond, Bob Dow, etc. And who can forget the 'mile high big-guy weather eye'? Somebody, can't remember who (maybe Jack Dalton) 'locked' himself in the studio and played "West of the Wall" non-stop.

WGUY's tower was next to the Capehart housing area on Finson Road set back in a fairly small field. The 5kw of RF used to give area residents reception on a variety of electric appliances.

One of my favorite station songs came from GUY. I still remember the lyrics today. Doesn't matter who the morning guy was, it always got played.

Good morning from the wonderful GUY,
Good morning from 1-2-5-0.
We hope you have a nice day today
And we'll do our best to make it that way!
Good morning from wonderful GUY radio.

And one of the catchiest ad jingles I used to hear:

Bonnie and Clyde, now don't you wait
Dial 9-8-9-7-0-7-8. 9-8-9-7-0-7-8!!

Now if I could find a video of the old WABI George Hale jingle/commercial with the rolling head, my life would be complete. Well, maybe not, but it would put a smile on my face.

The Bonnie & Clyde jingle was done in my studio across from 12 Main street where 12Rock lived. Singer was morning guy Jay Michaels and the business was owned by the wife of our sales manager. I'm suprised the Hale in the Morning ad isnt on youtube yet.
