Music and personality on 107.3 FM

The other WNWV-based topic has moved on to transmitter power and tower heights, so I thought it would be good to star a-new with a focus on where we're going. Today I heard "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles. Not a huge hit, but a great tune that I hadn't heard on radio in ages. They played a live in-concert version, which I sometimes have a problem with if it's clearly inferior to the studio original, but it was good in this case. For me, they play a bit too much live stuff, but other people think that's a great thing. Growth leading to ratings and revenue will decide.

Seems like every time I tune the station in, from day 1 as "Boom", "Them Changes" will be played. I know they were playing the tune a few times a day. They have some great tunes, but their playlist seems rather limited.

They still have some tweaking to do with rotations, dayparting, and presentation, but at least somebody is trying to do something that is outside the box. I hope they survive. Or else it will be replaced with yet another dated, cookie-cutter format programmed by the same people who ran out of ideas years ago, whose tired offerings are being rejected by more and more people every day. Look at radio cume figures over the past few years. Down down down.

"and where exactly are you getting that information?"

Arbitron Study of Top 94 Markets. What % of demo is listening to radio in an AQH?

Fall ‘98/Spring ’99:

18-34: 17.0
35-64: 17.0
65+: 15.3

Fall ‘02/Spring ’03:

This is the latest complete, national trend info that Arbitron has published which is available to non-subscribers. However, local trend stories (see Google) show continued, general audience deterioration for traditional broadcast radio since then.

I've rarely ever heard a "live" recording that sounded nearly as good as the original. Freebird, Reasons and Do You Feel (Like I DO) are exceptions.

"I Want You To Want Me" by Cheap Trick is infinitely superior in its live recorded rendition. The studio version lacks energy and is not as upbeat. Like some of Peter Frampton's stuff, the live version became the hit, and deservedly so.

Must've Got Lost & I Do by J. Geils are better than the studio version, same w/ Diana by Bryan Adams & Wanted Dead of Alive by Bon Jovi.

"Kick Out The Jams" by the MC5 is a great, classic live track. Although I don't think they ever did a studio version of it. And didn't Neil Young record "Keep On Rockin' in the Free World" and "Hey Hey My My" live?

Same with the Hall & Oates "Live at the Apollo Medley" & MANY Bruce Springsteen songs, especially when there's a story attached.

I believe they've settled on "V107-3". Had to wait for the lawyers to deal with the "boom" issue. Which was unfortunate... and IMO still think is crap. How can you service mark a HD-2 and compare to terrestrial, especially in another market/state? CBS really screwed with ELB about a station that most market "experts" say won't make a dent. It hasn't even been three months and it's being written off? Needs at least 3..even 4 books before one can truly critique/criticize. As long as the station makes money then it's a true success.

I always thought "Boom" was a weak monkker for the station. What does "V" stand for.... about the same as the "Q" in Q-104 or the erstwhile "G" in G-98. At least "V-107-3" has a touch of alliteration going for it. I think the owners have picked a tough niche, but it will be interesting to see if the old MMS rock 'n rollers can pull off a coup.
