Music Director at Jack (San Diego)

I have a question regarding the appointment of a Music Director at Jack FM San Diego. I am not trying to start anything or bash anyone....just asking a question.

I am probably wrong but I had thought the music on Jack was programmed in advance by someone sitting in the middle of America at Jack Corporate. The promos I have heard for Jack say "We play what we want to play".

Why would you need a music director locally?

Jack-FM as a format is licensed. Basically that buys you the name and some of the positioning statements (i.e. WE play what we want...etc.) Musically, each Jack station is programmed locally. Some play more songs than others, with different music focuses depending on the market (i.e. rock leaning, Hot AC leaning etc.)

What is most interesting about the appointment is that this is the second time Tracy Johnson has selected a relatively inexperienced former intern to step up to the music director chair. Jen Sewell being the prior MD/Intern. I'm not bashing Tracy, look at his track record. He knows what he is doing. I think it's likely that under him, the MD is largely a clerical position (dealing with record companies and busywork like that.)

I don't understand, why didn't they just make Jen Sewell the MD? Isn't that what she was before?
And what about Gregg Simms? Didn't he do that once also?

LOL -- You got that right, Chris.

Jen is pretty smart. She'll do well in this position. As was observed, MD is almost a vestigial organ under Tracy... especially when there's no currents to program. She'll be mostly doing music testing, I'd imagine.

Well put Chris.

Uh, Doc, I'm a little confused.
The MD job didn't go to Jen this time, it went to some other person.
Didn't it?

It's the other Jen :)

Sorry for the confusion, Gary - it's Jen Graham. Too many Jens! I should have been more clear.
