I've been having trouble getting "promotional" giveaways from Record companies, since we are not a reporting station. They Reps never get back to my calls or Emails. Not sure what to really do. Do you know of a record company that is "nice enough" to send out Cd's so we can give away on the air, even tho we're not a reporting station?
Thanks

Suggestion from an old-timer, don't give listeners CDs. Wouldn't you rather have the listeners listening to your station, rather than a CD? Give away dinners, shopping sprees, tickets to concerts, etc. They can be easily be traded out and you won't have to promise to play ho-hum songs in exchange for a hand full of CDs.

If you really must, subscribe to any trade magazine that you CAN report to. FMQB comes to mind. Pay the promoter a visit in their home city and take them to lunch. Don't beg. Don't whine. Just be a good guy. Then go home and take a shower. I've always felt "icky" hanging out with these people. :)
______________

At my last station, we were kind of in the same boat. We reported to a smaller trade (New Music Weekly), and would get response from smaller labels who's artists we were playing. As for the majors, what we did was simply fax a request to the Nashville offices. In the fax, we gave a quick description of our station (format, coverage, audience), and asked if they would send us some cd's to give to listeners, then wrap it up by thanking them for their help. All of the majors would always respond, and as I recall, Sony and Mercury were especially generous, sometimes sending 2-3 boxes worth.
Hope that helps you.

On the coverage map, mark every Wal~Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, and other SoundScan outlet that lies inside that circle!

Do you ever get those annoying faxes from The Marketing Group? The ones where they want you to play an hour long special on Brad Paisley, Toby Keith, or somebody else's "world premiere" special? Use those specials, and they'll usually send a half dozen of the artist's latest CD. Bury the one hour special where nobody cares, and reap the benefits of the free product. I got a whole filing cabinet drawer full of brand new CDs from Keith Anderson, George Strait, Brad Paisley, Hot Apple Pie, Buddy Jewell, Toby Keith, Dierks Bentley, and a few more. Good luck.
______________
