Music licensing

There's pretty much an accepted belief that shows like WKRP and others can't make it to DVD becasue of music licensing issues. Yet there are dozens of far more music intensive shows out on DVD. Is licensing just an excuse to keep from releasing a show when the cause is something else?

If shows like "Miami Vice" make it to DVD relatively intact and reasonably-priced, it may be nothing but an excuse. And since we're dealing with Fox, it may be a tough nut to crack.

What it amounts to is that Fox isn't willing to put out the money for the music licensing even if other companies are. It's probably a valid reason in their eyes, even though it's just an excuse in the fan's eyes.

I have heard the issue of music licensing is the reason why Fridays isn't available on DVD.
But I heard other reasons too such as Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels ,sometime in the 90s he bought the rights to show so he could mothball Fridays while I also heard one of the stars of Fridays had a clause in their contract that once the show left ABC it could never be placed in syndication, much less available on VHS let alone DVD.

SCTV had musical guests, and those shows are out on DVD. And the first season of SNL, complete with musical guests, comes out next month.

Fridays *was* syndicated for a brief time in the mid-80s.

It really depends on the license. As I understand shows like "Murphy Brown" and "Miami Vice" had a music license giving them pretty much free reign. However, the WKRP's of the world had a short term music license and updating depends on who maintains the distribution rights.

Last I heard, the only stumbling block for a Fridays DVD release is approval by one Fridays alum -- Michael Richards. And to date, he still didn't give is full approval for the series (though clips of him in action on Fridays was included on a Seinfeld DVD set).

was there ever talk about American Bandstand coming to DVD? Back in the mid 80s for a very short time there was a "Best of Bandstand" on VHS but it for some reason didn't last in stores, I assume it sold poorly. I do remember hearing an interview with Dick Clark back then saying there will be a number of volumes of this but I think only that one was ever released.

There is some kind of "Bandstand" collection available, I've seen infomercials for it while flipping channels.
