Music on AM

WGUL was or seemed to be a success by the standards of AM stations attempting music. Granted WDUV is and was the star of the older demos, WGUL offered a more personality driven alternative. Now WGUL is scraping the bottom of the board. Can somebody explain why nobody else has assumed their format? I know the canard that older demos don't buy anything, but it really wasn't doing that bad . And what about WJAS in PIttsburgh?

At least they put country oldies on 1010 putting more music on AM. 1590, 1150 does music aimed mostly to blacks, then you have all the spanish stations doing music. The main problem with Standards, or even pre Beatles oldies is lack of signals. So many of the good signals are owned by people that could care less about ratings, but about preaching and idealogy.

Check out KIXI 880 in Seattle -- 50,000 watts and they do a good job re-creating the standards sounds of the 60's (jingles & all) Solid ratings. It reminds me of the radio station my barber used to play when I was a kid.. www.kixi.com

Adult Standards with personalities that relate and know the music is a viable format here. Sadly, the "ad agency" mentality makes it dificult to survive aiming at upper demos. There is a wealth of outstanding material to play and a demo that has been forgotten. FF

With 92.5 killing the AM Spanish stations now, it might be a good choice for one of them. Wouldn't that music do well on the powerful daytime signal of 820?

Mega just sold its 3 DC-area properties to the Washington Redskins. I'd imagine 820 could also be had for the right price.<P ID="signature">______________

EXACTLY!

They sounded much better 8-10 years ago (with those same jingles, BTW) when they had it together and knew who they were. Now they're all over the map. Through most of the late 1990's KIXI was a Top 5 or Top 10 rated station in the Puget Sound. In the Fall ratings just released, they're #22.

AM 1320 THE DOVE IN SARASOTA
SAME FORMAT THAT USED TO BE ON 92.1

1) wasn't WDDV B/EZ? B/EZ is not Adult Standards

2) 1320 doesn't reach Tampa area

3) With one of the oldest per capita population in the country, how could Adult Standards just disappear? Look at the Ft.Myers ratings.

Yes you are correct, WDDV at 92.1 was first B/EZ and then soft AC. WDDV at 1320 is standards.

> 2) 1320 doesn't reach Tampa area

True, although it does go past Cuba in the daytime amazingly.

Apparently no one cares. The owners of WGUL could have easily transferred the format back to the FM or even bought another AM in town and moved GUL there(that's pretty much what just happened in Nashville recently)
