I tuned in FM 94.7 WLS-FM (oldies) in Chicago, and thought I was listening to a satellite broadcast.
They were playing (to puke for) "If you're going to San Francisco", and the sample rate just happened to match the pitch for
an upper-register tone of one of the instruments in the recording, and every time that note was hit, the sound went
"ZING..... ZING.... ZING... with a VERY distracting, discordant glare.
I can't beleive this is considered an acceptable arrangement. This is not some podunk backwater station.
This is major-market, and it sounded as unprofessional as music off cassettes or eight-tracks.
Please bring back the cue-burned 45s, or the 10.5 inch reels at 3 3/4 with the 25hz switching.
Must we always "progress" to something that sounds worse?
I sure "they" must have something worse sounding waiting in the wings or they'd have never suggested this was acceptable.
How about MORE data compression?
Does anyone know how many cascaded D/A -A/D steps would be in use at such a station?
