Music Radio WABC

I listened tonight way up here in the North Country. The signal was strong and crisp. The show wasn't perfect but it was still GREAT! What happened to WABC chime time?

I listened to the whole thing over here in Wisconsin. Start to finish. It was one of the most amazing things I have heard in a long time. Definately going to make a point to listen every Saturday night.<P ID="signature">______________

I got a chance to tune in last night. Thought the show was off to a great start.I really enjoyed hearing the old jingles, the music, and liked the reverb. I can think of no better place to do this, since no one else has jumped on the oldies format as a whole. I thought I heard some chime times mixed in the top hour ID's..

I agree with the previous poster; they should devote the entire weekend to oldies, give all those right wings nut jobs a few days off to rest their dentures!Mark Simone did a great job, and in a swipe at the CBS FM idiots, played "Hit The Road,Jack" by Ray Charles; marvelous!

What an awesome early Christmas present from the folks at WABC! Listened to 3 hours of it and enjoyed it thorougly. Chime time did make a showing, but a bit later in the show. Really great job by Mark Simone - he really belonged behind that mike and clearly recognized the significance of the moment. The whole evening was absolute ear candy!

Yes, it would be awesome if WABC went oldies all weekend, but for now I would happily settle for an extened Saturday night show (6p-1a).

I too enjoyed the show thoroughly, and Mark was truly incredible as usual. Sounded amazing in Patterson on the Superadio II.

A few small problems here...

(1) My biggest pet peave was the pre-produced sound of the show. "Hit the button"? Duh. Simone belongs behind the board just as he belongs behind the mic. It's either that, or they install someone behind the board who can run hot segs and work with mark the way it worked back in the heyday. As a talk station, the WABC studios aren't set up that way, obviously, so let Mark run the board himself. They must have an annc mic in the control room, and if they don't, it wouldn't be that hard to install one. You can't take requests when your music is pre-picked and the jingles are already embedded.

(2) Too many promos for talk programming. I lost count of how many times C&K were plugged, not only by our host but also in liners. Lose that crap for the oldies show, it interrupts the flow and just sounds wrong. If you must plug websites and such, keep it to a minimum. It's bad enough we have to hear modern sponsor spots during the show.

(3) For the first show, the calls were great. Can it the next time around. This show should focus on requests and on its own flow, and again, the only way to do that is to either have Simone run his own board or get an engineer in control who can handle it.

I want to see this thing survive, because it's great! I wanted more, so after 10pm I went to 'KB and that kept me up most of the night.

"...How can you be deaf, with ears like that??"</P>

I liked the right jingles played after the songs. He played the same jingle after Gilbert O' Sullivan and Albert Hammond as musicradio played in the early seventies.

I think calls should be severely rationed. One long call per hour and three fifteen second requests or at-a-boy calls is the most that should go.

One or two old spots may be nice with jingles in between. Maybe one old aircheck per show with full legnth song included.

How about a pre-recorded show? Would that sound better? Maybe not.

As a guide, they should use The Time Machine from WNBC. But only as a guide to improve.

I think it was a great first show. I cracked up when I heard the "first songs" all 14 of them!

My one pet peve is Mark stopped the music too often to talk. Dan Ingram could say more over a record intro and still keep things moving. Forward motion we used to call it. If you want to stop and do a talk bit or take a phone call do it before a spot set or play some party music in the background the way Brucie used to do it. Minor point though, he did a great job overall

I'm just happy they are doing it, something different on the radio for a change. I hope response is good and they keep doing it or even expand it.

The promos for the talk shows is just good programming...cross promote your other shows whenever possible! That's a basic rule of radio programming!

I thought the reverb sounded great. The "WABC reverb sound" always sounded like New York City to me.

I keep wondering when listeners will get tired of all the political talk that's on AM radio these days.
