Music Schedulers

Anybody know of any decent stand-alone music schedulers? We're upgrading from Pristine System's RapidFire automation system to the new CDS32 and would like something windows based instead of their awful dos-based music manager.

Any help would be great!!!

Spend the money and get Selector or Music Master.. you're going to have enough headaches dealing with CDS32. Have fun.

What's up with Pristine Systems?

Oh no! What's the deal with CDS32? I haven't heard of major problems like Rapidfire has. If you wouldn't mind filling me in on the pros and cons of CDS32, that may swing my decision to another company.

To be honest, I've never worked with CDS32.. but Pristine makes it so that automatically makes me question it. I think it would be worth the time and effort to research getting a Nextgen system from Prophet. It may be more expensive, but well worth the extra $$. Pristine doesn't have a very good track record of putting out reliable systems and frankly I wouldn't pay them a dime just so I could be a lab rat for another one of their unproven cutting edge products.. remember the phrase "once bitten, twice shy".. Well, I'm two times bitten by them so I've totally written them off. But that's just me..

Regardless of which system you purchase.. just a bit of advice.

Make SURE it's installed and setup properly from the get-go. Pay the extra $$ to get a professional installer to come in and don't let them leave until it's working the way YOU want it to work. I don't know how many times I've seen a system thrown into service, then 6 months down the road the GM is screaming because it's not working right, spots are being missed, etc. All because it wasn't installed properly in the first place. I've seen stations go for years with their systems not setup properly and encounter headache after headache.. again, because they tried to save a few $$ on the front end and it wasn't installed and setup properly.

And oh yeah.. there's almost always one employee in every station that thinks they're the ultimate computer/automation guru. At some point they're going to get the bright idea that they can "tweak" the system which ultimately will lead to a crash or major problem....... be prepared to pry their fingernails off or hang them from their toes on the tower when that happens as a stearn warning to others.. :) Automation systems work best when they're setup and for the most part (excluding day to day routines) left alone.

The Scott System is right up there with Prophet. Used both. Have Scott and VT32 in all 4 stations in Alabama. Went right on the air with no issues. Scott even dumped in all the music and Selector log. And, as far as music schedulers are concerned, the best is Selector - hands down. Been that way for 3 decades.

I've worked with many different schedulers, and most recently, I used Music Master, and for my money, it's far and above the best and most cost effective scheduler out there. I've used Selector and the others, but MM is also one of the most user friendly schedulers available.

my two cents

I have used TONS of on air systems...

PLEASE save yourself headaches and get NextGen. I have never used a system as smart as this one...I thinks like jocks do...took me 1 hour to be able to do an on air shift. Think about it...1300 clear channel stations can't be wrong! I used Scott...its OK...the old DCS with the blue screen wasn't horid...probably awesome when it came out...

If you heed anything out of my post STAY AWAY FROM:

Smartcaster or The Phantom from DCS

As for music...If there is anyway possible...Selector. When you call em...tell em you are looking at other stuff because of cost...they'll cut ya a deal!

Some owners, though, hate the monthly charges...so you may not be able to pull Selector off...so I would try Music Gen from profit. You don't have to run their systems to get it....its free! just pay for a few months of tech support and you're good to go.

I hated Music Master...but we ran the DOS version...I used that free one from DCS and at one point went to a MANUAL CARD SYSTEM in 2002 because it sucked so bad...

So to recap...NextGen and Selector...Gold standard. Hard pressed to have a better combo than that! NextGen and MusicGen are made to work together so thats the silver...

Go to your bosses and tell em you'll settle for MusicGen if you get NextGen
