MUSIC TIL DAWN

A few questions concerning this overnight program sponsored by American Airlines:

1). What year did it start?

2). What year did it end?

3). Did all of the CBS O&Os carry it?

4). Beside the CBS O&Os, what other facilities carried it? (I believe it was on KRLD in Dallas).

Aside from Music 'til Dawn, the only similar program of that type during that era that I recall was one hosted by Dolly Holiday for Holiday Inn. The difference (if I'm not mistaken) was that Music 'til Dawn was locally-originated at each station.

WLW also ran it - and it was locally originated.

WLW did originate "Music 'Til Dawn" sponsored by American Airlines until probably the late 1960's. The last host of the program was Bill Myers who is still living in the Cincinnati area. For a good period of time, WLW was the only Cincinnati station on the air during the early-morning hours. The program came on at 12:30 A.M. Eastern Time immediately following the 30-minute program "Moon River" and continued until 5:00 A.M. The opening of the show featured the announcer saying..."American Airlines greets you with Music...Til.....Dawn". Whereupon there would be an instrumental recording played of the song "That's All".

I wasn't up that late as a kid, but I remember that KNX (Los Angeles) late night show in the 50s and 60s was titled Music Til Dawn. I also learned later that KCBS San Francisco used the same title. Both stations went all news about 1968.

The original host of that show on KCBS in the 50s - Dave McElhatton - went on to morning drive, and then became a legendary TV news anchor in the Bay Area from the mid 70s to the late 90s. Dave just passed away recently.

But in both cases - the shows were totally local. I believe the "Music Til Dawn" title was typically used by CBS O&Os and affiliates. Kind of like The Late Show and Late Late Show were used locally for late night movies.

WWJ, Detroit, then an NBC affiliate, ran Music 'Til Dawn (not WJR, then a CBS affiliate, which ran it's own all-night music show called "Nightflight 760").

Story was CR Smith, American Airlines president, sponsored the show because he wanted to be able to listen to music he liked late at night.

The host of MTD on WCBS in New York (pre-newsradio88) was Bob Hall, who had previously played The Green Hornet, which originated from WXYZ in Detroit.

"'Music 'Til Dawn' ... was broadcast on several clear-channel AM stations throughout the country.

I remember listening to it in the late-night hours, with my transistor and earphone when I was

WLW in Cincinnati broadcast it, as did WBZ in Boston and WBBM in Chicago. Jay Andres did the show in Chicago, and did he ever have a voice for it!

I remember reading (somewhere on this site, maybe?) that KNX's Music Till Dawn host was the guy who was the announcer for "Gunsmoke"...I think his name was George Walsh.
