Music Tweak @ The Beat-SA

It appears the music adjustment took place after midnite.

New adds-
Justin Bieber
David Guetta
Enrique Iglesias
Taio Cruz
Far East Movement
and others...

Also, the lunch break flash back is history. IMO, this comes as no surprise. The Beat has slowly been transitioning itself over the last several months.

This doesn't surprise me. There is not much Hip-Hop out there for KBBT to play these days, plus they are being affected by what its listeners are hearing these days, so they have to adapt.

It looks good except justin Beiber.. I cant stand that little twerp, His music belongs on radio disney,, I certainly wouldnt play him at Rhythmic or Dance... Id have to if I was CHR,, but he has no place on Urban or rhythmic radio. Otherwise,, nice that they added the dancy stuff.

In addition, I hear 98.5 revenue is down and they've been losing their female audience to Mix and KTFM.

Hip-hop stations in general target males, and their audience is overwhelmingly male. They also tend to have power ratios of less than 1:1 due to their audience composition!

True. But in San Antonio they had a respectable size of female listeners.

Personally, maybe this tweak is a wake up call for KBBT. Plus if you look at the Rhythmic chart now the Hip-Hop hits that took up most of the positions in past years has declined and the music is trending toward more Electro-pop/Dance tracks. Fred's right about KBBT and its target audience, so they have to keep up and with San Antonio being a PPM market and having seen what has happened to Rhythmic radio in other markets, they're taking no chances. And as long as they keep KXXM and KTFM from overtaking them, even with the tweaking, KBBT will continue to thrive no matter what.

Cant be mad at them for changing with the times.

Heard Telephone by Gaga and Beyonce on my way to work this morning. How long have they been playing that one?

In my opinion they should've made this change a while ago.... I am black and I really don't prefer 98.5 and neither does my family because we come from areas where we had Urban stations (which are true representations in my eyes of hip hop radio, although many big named hip hop stations are considered rhy they still sound urban)...

But my point is that some of my family that is hear now truly never listens to The Beat my aunt when she goes to work use to listen to 810 (Tom Joyner) but now listens to 96.1 and 94.1 because she can't tolerate them considering their selves hip hop when all it is is 10 songs in a loop and when they add music it's about 7 weeks after it's been being played in Houston, Dallas and sometimes even Austin weeks in advance...

They were never a true authentic hip hop station to me so they should've made this transition a while ago and when looking at all requirements when applying for jobs in radio you always see (can relate to female audience) and allaccess has been running things all summer about to get your female ayudience more engaged and more devoted to your station etc etc etc etc

I yet again make this notion American radio needs to make some drastic changes, the same programming is getting old the Beat sounds exactly the same.. I moved here in 04 and nothing has changed about that station besides the annoying 'Beat Tags' at the end of the songs...

I like the beat. One of the better hiphop stations around. I like them better than 102.3 the beat. At least 98.5 has DJs.

The Beat SHOULD go the urban route as pop is already covered by KTFM and KXXM. That, of course, won't happen because it's owned by Univision. So it will probably go to spanish if they decide to can The Beat. Sounds like Magic is playing a lot of pop recurrents as well...perhaps a slow transition away from 80s.

Oh the tables will turn if KTFM beats out KBBT.

Yupp I doubt The Beat will do that because they don't have the black pop. to back them but I honestly think it could work here in SA if done right... Same with an Urban AC, because we have the military bases here and so many older blacks do retire here but whatever it'll never happen (maybe I shouldn't say never)

Is it just me or is 98.5 The Beat almost all rhythmic-leaning CHR now? I wonder how much longer they will brand themselves as "Number 1 for Hip Hop and R&B"

Maybe not too long. 98.5 is basically CHR now. I was in CC for Christmas, and I was listening to KNDA 102.9 Da Bomb, and that station plays more real Hip Hop and Urban than 98.5 The Beat.

Yeah.. other than a few songs... KTFM, Mix, and The Beat have the same basic playlist. Something's going to have to give eventually because I don't see SA sustaining three CHRs. Very fun times in store for San Antonio radio.

I hear KTFM will have a new morning show beginning January 2011.

KNDA is a mom and pop and has always been programmed in a different kind of way. When I worked there the owners 21 year old son was running the show. No one there has had any real programming experience. Well... least when I was there. Hell, the play list on my show stayed the same for months literally. Needless to say when I was there I noticed that station was in no way anywhere close to a traditional corp station. They added music that would never run on Urbans across the country and they also played a lot of Texas rap. So to compare that kind of station to KBBT is kind of unfair.
