Musical chairs at Beasley

First, Mike O'Brian leaves Star to cross the hall to be part of mornings at KKLZ. We get word that Beth Lano is leaving Star (and Beasley all together). Now, All Access is reporting that Rick Kelly will join Tom Kelly for wakeups on the Coyote. What's going on over there?

Well number 1 they are the worst company in the history of radio to work for. B- They are the worst company in radio history to work for. There is no thought put into the product at all only sales. See what happens when a few hillbillies get a few bucks to buy a company! Mike and Beth were not that good to begin with. Mike O'Brian has never been good period. How is he so bullet proof?

ummmm, was it that bad that you needed to say it twice...with 1 and B?

i have to say that beasley has been one of the BEST companies i've worked for PERIOD. i can count on ZERO fingers the amount of times i met ANYONE above the local GM at any of the stations i've worked at. here at KDWN, brian beasley stops by to see how things are going, he's nice and actually takes time out to say hi and see how you are doing. i can name PD's that wouldn't even say GOODMORNING or even look into the studio. hey jack!

so, you must have been fired or you never worked for beasley...cause your view is very different from mine.

One thing is for sure, hiring Rick Kelly for Coyote is the SMARTEST move they could have made! Rick is the consumate professional. He and Tom will start enjoying some ratings success soon.(when the spring book comes back, the morning race for country will be tight, if not over for KWNR) Rick's positive attitude, strong work ethic, nearly 20 years in the market make him a huge asset. Rick has the ability to touch people he meets, whether it's a listener, co-worker, or client, midday jock Terrie Springs has that same ability...finally Coyote is building a team! Cadillac in afternoons, and Rob Banks vs. an voicetracked Jeff Jay from Alberquerque...talk about an easy bonus check!
Star should go "classic alternative" and give up this abortion of a format they have now...it's not working, it's not focused at all...Why they continue to play titles which hurt sister station KKLZ is beyond me! I miss "the edge."(The 1st year they signed on, they were soooo good!)
As far as KKLZ goes....without Dan Lea, you have no prayer...ever since they fired him, that station has gone dead! Dan is one person who could resurrect that station and bring it back to life. The other two are former KKLZ P.D.'s Bill May and Jeff Murphy.(those guys know classic rock, and had the numbers to prove it!) Of course, Dan worked with both of those guys!
The only thing that pops into my mind for Star is maybe Beasley wants to get Mark and Mercedes from Mix, and maybe former Mix midday jock Paul Sands to go there...other than that, I have no idea what GM Tom Davis is doing or thinking. Anyone else have any ideas?

I agree that putting Rick Kelly in at the Coyote is the smartest thing they could do. Rick's a great talent with lots of local roots. As an outsider watching this unfold it seems that every RIGHT move The Coyote makes, KWNR makes a WRONG move. I've got my money on KKLZ to flipping to Oldies sometime in the near future.

Now about Star trying to pick up Mark and Mercedes....I could have swore I recently read on AllAccess that they signed a pretty lucrative deal with CBS for multiple years and according to Paul Sands myspace page he's in Chicago. As for flipping to 'Classic Alternative' there just isn't room on the dial. Between KOMP, Xtreme, and Area they pretty much have that audience covered. There aren't enough listeners to fill that niche format.

I beg to disagree on the "classic alternative" format...If we had 1 station that played...depeche mode, new order, the cure, the smiths, r.e.m., u2...the early punk stuff, etc...im sure it would do well..the dance side of alternative...female friendly...familar...only 2 stations play any here at all...mix..(maybe 1 per hour) and area 108 with the crap signal...if we had a station that played nothing but from the years 1979-1990 ish the 25-54 numbers would be better than you think...When The Edge first signed on, that's what they did, their numbers were huge...the more current based they became, the crappier their numbers...Star has a great signal with poor music programming...I have seen research that women 25-54 like this kind of music very much(even though I am so sick of "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell) The research shows it is still very positive, and not a ton of burn...Love to hear Culture Club, some 1 hit wonders like Jane Child, Living Colour, The Cult...if you play just the hits alone you would have a 1000 song library for sure(although the list I saw had 400 titles on it...) The Edge and their "jingle bell rock" promotion is well remembered by listeners here, and with former Edgehead Jamie Osborn in the building, they could pick his brain and that station would kick ass...about a 4 share or or so, which is certainly better than Star(old and new) has seen in years!

So.. would anyone like to make a bet with me the Mike O'Ego, I mean Obrian will be gone by oh say... July??

I would say.......WRONG.

But long-time KKLZ'er Dennis Mitchell is out; along with Backseat Beth. The morning show is now "Tofte and O'Brian In The Morning".

Mike is now getting (taking) much more mic time. Trust me...O'Brian talks a good game. He's not going anywhere. I hope Dennis lands on his feet. He's a good guy.

Dennis was just named Favorite Radio Personality in the annual poll of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Did Dennis leave on his own or was he let go?

Dennis was the R-J editors pick for favorite radio personality, in the readers poll Mark and Mercedes won again followed by Country Chuck.
