Musical chairs in Duluth

The sales of jointly-operated KBJR Channel 6 and KDLH Channel 3 in Duluth are pending after an initial announcement over 18 months ago. KBJR (formerly WDSM-TV) is to be acquired by Quincy Newspapers, Inc. from Granite Broadcasting Corp. KDLH (formerly KDAL-TV) is being bought by Sagamore Hill Broadcasting Co. from Malara Broadcasting Corp.

Nine months after the sale is finalized, KDLH, a CBS affiliate for 60 years, will become a primary CW affiliate; with CBS programming to move to a subchannel of NBC-affiliated KBJR. Under the final agreement, KDLH will re-establish a separate sales department, but will remain dependent on KBJR for news programming, local production, and administrative services. Malara fired nearly all of KDLH's staff upon purchasing the station in 2005; entering a joint agreement with KBJR.

(The former KDLH studios were demolished last year to make way for a new office building for Dress Barn stores.)

The change is set to take effect August 1. CBS will move to KBJR 6.2 and MNT to 6.3. The CW goes to KDLH 3.1.

Where did you hear that?

same person has posted it a few times over at northpine's Facebook page and over at satellitegays

Also they (Quincy) had to wind down the JSA within 9 months of the FCC approving the deal. It was approved Nov 2nd. 9 months form November 2nd is.....August 1st ;)

Quincy Newspapers has begun to implement changes at its recently-acquired TV operation in Duluth, with changes to newscasts and a longtime network affiliation set to move in a few weeks.

Announcements are now running saying that CBS will move from KDLH/3.1 (Duluth) to KBJR/6.2 (Superior-Duluth) at 10 a.m. on Aug. 1, though CBS will retain its channel 3 position on cable and satellite. KDLH, originally KDAL-TV, has been the Northland's CBS affiliate since 1955. Quincy is making the change because it agreed to stop selling ads on KDLH as a condition of its purchase of KBJR from Granite Broadcasting. KBJR is a primary NBC affiliate and also carries MyNetworkTV on 6.2, which will presumably move to 6.3. KDLH, owned by SagamoreHill, will become a primary CW affiliate.

The changes that may actually be more noticable to viewers deal with newscasts. KBJR debuted a new news set, Quincy's graphics package, a new evening co-anchor, and a second morning anchor this week. Meanwhile, the CBS channel is taking a two-week break from airing local news. The CBS Evening News has returned to the traditional 5:30 timeslot, and program listings indicate the new CBS lineup will include local newscasts at 6 and 10 p.m. and from 5 to 7 a.m. Up until last week, KDLH had aired live newscasts at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and a recorded newscast at 10 p.m.

KBJR also dropped the "Northland's NewsCenter" slogan and has stopped mentioning "Range 11," which referred to satellite station KRII/11.1 (Chisholm).

well now this is interesting
looking at titantv as of right now they show KRII as
11-1 NBC
11-2 CW
11-3 CBS
11-9 My

which is correct. But they show all in HD which is wrong (only 11-1 is in HD)

But as of 8/1 it shows
11-1 NBC
11-2 CBS
11-3 and 11-9 My
again all in HD

I assume they will move CBS from 11-3 to 11-2 and keep My on 11-9 as it currently is. Zap2it has no changes yet

and to top it off after last weeks massive storm through Northern MN now KRII is off the air due to transmitter damage

from KBJR's facebook page

Our Hibbing transmitter received major damage last week during the storm. We have ordered parts in order to fix the transmitter, and we'll be sending a crew to the area as soon as we receive parts. If all goes well and no other parts are damaged and need to be ordered, we plan to have power restored to the transmitter sometime this week. We thank you for your patience.

While CBS (KDLH) has moved to channel 6.2, it has (so far anyway) retained its "Channel 3" branding. With the ownership change and new FCC rules on ownership, Channel 3 will be starting a new format for their newscast, with a different set and possibly additional talent (they had previously shared 6's news set.) But the new news studio is still under construction, so for the present they are running stopgap programming in their news slots. With the move of MyNetwork to the new 6.3, the former 3.2 is blank for the present.
PS: Happy retirement to old pal Bill Ward, who turned in his badge at KBJR on August 1 after 35+ years!

6.2 is on cable channel 3 (and maybe channel 3 as well on the satellites)

correct

The CW probably still ID"s as "CW2" (cable placement from back in the WB days). I havent been to Duluth recently to check :)

Or "Northland's CW 2"
