MusicRadio 1000

Last Sunday morning I was trying to tune in ESPN 1000 from Chicago at 4am (the only dial spot in NE Harrisburg where ESPN Radio can be tuned in after dark). Instead WI00 was beaming 70s top-40, interrupted by their engineer explaining they were doing testing and asking people to request QSL cards (one caller supposedly was from Illinois). What gives?

No, there is a "test period" after midnight when such tests are permitted. All stations must install and test new equipment at some point. Give us a listen, I think you'll agree our new processing gives us a clean, bright, very high quality sound!

The Wilkinson, after many years as our main (it was bought in 1973) went down about 4 years ago and we've had trouble finding parts for it. The company is long out of business and Mr. Wilkinson died sometime in the late 80's. It was replaced by an LPB Omni 1000, which is now our main. The old ITA-1000B, now 43 years old, was the station's original transmitter when it went on the air in 1965. It is in good repair and is still in service as our auxiliary rig. While the Omni, with no filaments to light, uses considerably less electricity, the old ITA has a beautiful, warm, all-tube sound. And in a severe thunderstorm, when the solid-state rig is kicked off the air, the ITA just sits there and plays like nothing is happening. It really is an old workhorse!
