Musicradio 77 era (1960–1982)

It was the first week of December 1960 when WABC began their Rock N Roll Music Radio format. This December will mark 53 years anniversary. I'm just wondering if WABC ever has held any anniversary's since their sign on. It would be great if WABC had their upcoming 55th Anniversary Special in 2015.

during its last few years WABC was no longer the music giant it had been.
it aired some talk shows & Yankees baseball. Ingram & Lundy
& a few low paid jocks kept the music going until the last day in May 1982.

Someone who was 20 years old in 1960 is 73 today. In 2015 s/he will be 75. What motivation would WABC have for programming an anniversary special to that audience?

It isn't even a music station today so running a nostalgic music special would do nothing to help its current brand image. In fact I believe that's why they dropped the Memorial Day weekend rewind special years ago.

WABC dropped the memorial day music & saturday night music in
recent years. More infomercials are the likely the plan now for 77--Radio. How sad.

so as far as they are concerned ,the musicradio days never happened?

A good recent barmometer -- or should that read a 'discouraging' barometer? -- about any reunion plans
would be the rise and fall of their Saturday Night Oldies show hosted by Mark Simone.

Only sporadically, and really, mostly at the start of its run, the show was fantastic imo. Allan Sniffen even began a separate board for it to reflect the show's response.

The show frequently got pre-empted, partially or completely, by ball games. And in summer, the signal travelled through the non-skip daylight propogation, sometimes more than halfway through the show. Although by one account those hours enjoyed a 300% increase in listenership, the show was decidedly a second citizen even at its peak of popularity.

No more Simone there anyway ... no more show. And with Cumulus now running things, including a cultivation of their Nash aegis, the chances are greater that we'd be hearing rebroadcasts or anniversary shows of the Grand Ol' Opry on WABC Saturday Nights before we'd see any salute of WABC's past glory days. And you know what the chances of that older C&W being broadcast are. What's the line? Check the calendar to see when Hell freezes over?

Righto, Ralph.

MusicRadio is kaput for good. Yet, the demo myopia continues in ownership. Word is that long-time AoR WRCN-FM Riverhead will be switching to news/talk in January. The usual syndicated lineup is expected aboard.

Now, WRCN was never a major force. It's doubtful they ever came close to a 2.0 share in all those years. In fact, the farther west they kept moving their tower, the less important they were in the ratings.

So now their big plan after the ball drops is to put a format in place that reaches a demo *older* than the one they want to shed?
On the face of it, that's ridiculous.

The theory in some powwows the past several years has been that the Classic Rock concept just might desert the dials before the Oldies/Greatest Hits stations do. WRCN might just be the first domino to topple in the NYC metro and cause a ripple of concern elsewhere.

But if an FM music station with music NEWER than Oldies is tossing in the towel for a format that skews even older, then what other strange things are in store?

Yeah, though. We are too old, lol. Besides, there are enough available WABC air checks from those days on the web to placate anyone who craves the sound. How much of that era can anyone take before their acne starts to return?
