####Anyone hear the Corm and the Coach sweepers on Champ kicking off music sets, etc. Well, at least the listeners can hear them on those since they are off the air and on vacation more than Johnny Carson used to be. Hey guys...your dwindling audience called and wondered where the hell you are!!! (well at least 2 of them)

####Just to prove I give it out equally...someone tell Dave Marshall at the Wizard it's 2007 and the audience that he's talking to doesn't think of "what the concert lineup" is going to be is a national priority. Earth to Dave...you play classic rock....sure it's great there are some concerts going on but quit treating every show like it's man landing on the moon.

####The KOOL train just keeps on going...the question is...to where? Does this station have any identity left? Does Hall realize that WIZN and KOOL are fighting it out now? Dan...get out of programming...please! Just sit in your office and go to board meetings for public service organizations....you can't harm your stations that way!

####What happened to 97.5? The country station started up strong but have been among the missing as of late! Don't stop now guys!

####Star continues with Tesh in PM Drive...Delilah at nite....sweepers overnite. Jeez...can't you guys something syndicated for AM Drive and Middays so we have a clean sweep? Soes STAR really stand for Shifts That Are Recorded!

####MP103 just keeps trucking along and I predict this station will continue to drop just like it did this book. The newness has gone...the presentation is stale. Time to take it to the next level. Oh wait. This is Northeast Broadcasting...there IS no next level! Next!

Negative? Sure. Fun? You bet. Good night Mr & Mrs Radio...wherever you are.

Don't they run "Best of?"

When you run a gold-based format, you have to do something to make the music appear fresh. It's not like the Wizard has any new artists to hype (which is why they struggle, but that's a different thread.)

Are they? Kool still sounds decidedly female, and the Wizard still sounds decidedly male. That's the difference between classic hits and classic rock.

I recently heard somebody mention how much he liked Eagle, and cited the long spotloads on WOKO. So Eagle has that going for them, which is nice.

####Star continues with Tesh in PM Drive...Delilah at nite....sweepers overnite. Jeez...can't you guys something syndicated for AM Drive and Middays so we have a clean sweep? Soes STAR really stand for Shifts That Are Recorded!

Mornings have been a revolving door on that station for ages. They need to go back to their Hot AC approach as well. If they can be Triple X without the T-Pain and the cheesy imaging, they can put a listenable product on the air. Instead, they seem to believe that today's 40-year old woman is a boring stay-at-home mom instead of somebody who will shake her ass to Justin Timberlake while driving the kids to school. I recently spoke to a former employee of Star who told me that Mike McVay began consulting the station, and forced a vanilla AC approach on them.

My mom seems to be listening to Kool more these days than MP103. I tried to do plenty of listening when I was up there last weekend, but didn't really get a chance to listen to MP.

Negative? Sure. Fun? You bet. Good night Mr & Mrs Radio...wherever you are.

While we're on the subject of Burlington, why did I hear techno music on 106.3 on Saturday night? I thought that was a different format out of Saranac Lake. Also, what was I hearing on 93.3? Sounded like dance music as well.

this is probably off topic a bit, but WWLR 91.5 we have one kick ass liner of Corm graduating from LSC up here in the kingdom and when he's here that its the only station he listens too... thanks Corm ;)
and on a nother note I love to play that liner when I am on Saturdays 9 - MID ( til Further notice ) ::)

wow, Ray D. Oh is on fire....

finally an interesting post on Burl./Platts. radio....

actually the one observation that hurts the most is the "Star 92.9" observation....what a waste of a flamethrower of a signal....don't kill the messenger though, the only blame lays with corporate...Clear Channel and Goode Broadcasting are crapping on each other in court right now, so you are getting "lean" and "mean" operations....

Dr. P---I'm not sure that the CC/Goodradio saga is the real reason for this. Sure, budgets have been cut but the PD doesn't do an airshift. Instead, he opts to do the morning news on Star. Wouldn't it be a better move to have him do middays and then have their midday body do PM Drive to keep it local? Or he do PM Drive? Couldn't the guy (Jamie Dennis?) who does news, etc for The Zone in AM Drive also do the AM Drive news for Star? Seems to me that while they don't have a ton of extra bodies in the building---they do have enough to do more local programming on Star than they opt to do now. It seems their allocation of people is missing the mark...unless you like to be syndicated/sweeper for 60% of the broadcast day. This is a station that should be ashamed...with it's 100,000 watt signal and no competition A/C format....to be so behind WOKO in the ratings...almost 10 shares!

What nothing about 92.1, "The True Oldies Channel" ? Great presentation, great music, and yes, Scott Shannon even tells you that it it satellite delivered.. That's truth and honesty in radio in it's purest form. This demonstrates that no one really cares where the music comes from as long as it sounds good in your speakers.. No rocket science here.

One more thing.. What is up with the Eagle as a few posts before had mentioned ? I saw a good locally produced commercial for them on TV the other night. How's the commercial load ? Can't hear them where I live.. I'd like to see them do well.

Eagle does not seem to be gaining alot of traction with advertisers. Many "infomercial" type commercials for weight loss products and it runs a commercial for the same credit union at almost every break. Really expected more by now. Eagle's weekday mornings and middays remain locally produced. After 3 pm or so, its all VT.

It really is a shame about Star. A year ago it was sounding so much better with local airshifts until 7pm, traffic reports morning and afternoon, time and temperature checks etc. Now the station is VT after 9am until Tesh at 3pm. It should be "the information station" for this market, like WZID is in NH. But it has absolutely no reason to listen after 9am. Interestingly, my wife's office use to listen to Star until about nine months ago. But the group in her office also found it "lifeless" and now Boston's Magic 106.7's stream is played over all three floors through its central music system.

Interesting about Eagle, last I knew one of the owners was out there calling on businesses. Not sure if they have a local field force or not in place. Thought that station would have been a radio version of, 'Flip that House", and caught the radar of any potnetial buyers looking for a good format with pretty much full market coverage. I'm sure the soft advertising climate has not made things any easier for the Eagle at this point in time.

***BUMP***

Spent plenty of time driving around Burlington today...a few thoughts on Burlington radio...

-Anybody hear the spots on Triple X for Northern Lights? Not only is it a 60-second spot for a shop that sells marijuana paraphernalia, but the spot even makes a joke about the business "not being found in a AAA guidebook." Ha ha ha. Paul Goldman has no shame. They could've requested that the copy said "your one stop pot shop!", and it would have still been approved.

I remember years ago when they began the "Saturday Night Playground" promotion at Rocket Superclub. Sam Hemingway criticized the X for promoting drunk driving (of course, he could've criticized the city's bar community and licensing board, but that's another message board entirely.) To that end, the spots were tagged "95 Triple X and the Rocket support designated drivers." I'd like to hear what the X does to the spot when somebody calls them out on this one. I'll be listening to their stream, er, waiting a month to hear them again. How's that for trying to maximize the audience?

-I joked earlier this week about the 70's tunes on Star 92.9. What two songs do I hear back-to-back? "House of the Rising Sun" and "Running On Empty." Is this Star, or is this Champ? I understand as well as anybody that Vermont has a dearth of young people, and that the Burlington market reflects that, but we already have Champ and the Wizard playing those records! Don't get cute with AC, just play "If I Could Turn Back Time!" Nobody else in Burlington plays that!

-Of course, the music is shaky, but the morning show just sounds awful. I heard a promo in which Nolan asked "What's the difference between Big Bird and John Travolta?" Lana says "one is yellow and covered in feathers, and the other's on Sesame Street." Note to Star: If I have to Google something to get the joke, it's not funny. To be fair, I found a recent L.A. Times article that talked about this. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's way too obscure for a morning show promo.

-Why isn't the Wizard playing current rock music anymore? Look, we all like Poison. But we also like the Killers, and the Fray, and Daughtry. Those are mainstream rock songs. Play them. Don't give me the "Buzz plays current music excuse." There's a difference between mainstream and alternative. Buzz doesn't play Heart, and Wizard doesn't play Fall Out Boy. Why am I the only person who gets this? Let Corm play the same records for another 10 years. The Wizard is faltering because they're not relevant. In 10 years, they've gone from a heated rivalry with the new kid on the block to "who cares?" Even the new logo is terrible. You're the Wizard! You have to keep the purple and the wizard silhouette!

Didn't really listen to anybody else, so I have nothing further to offer.

Will---

You brought up some excellent observations. I too, have wondered about the 70's tunes on Star. It seems that the consultants there are running the show.

I'm not surprised about Wizard. Hall is afraid of the format and afraid of offending ANYBODY in the market...so you get a very vanilla classic rock station. I agree...changing that logo is a real sin. There goes the heritage. The Wizard needs to differentiate itself more from Champ. Playing some current music would help.

Face it...both of the classic rock stations in this market are on life support. Sunday morning Champ was running nothing but awful liners done by Corm and the Coach between songs. Give us a break and play sweepers if you have to but those liners were just plain lame. In one Corm said "...disco still sucks". Woo-boy. And that was as creative as it got.

Not sure what's up the Eagle ? I'd like to see them do well, seem to have their on air sh*t together ! I know one of the owners was beating the bushes for business, not sure if they ever put a field force together.. Not sure what "WB" is thinking ? Bad experience ?

While we're musing, any reason why WCAT isn't broadcasting a high school basketball game tonight?

As far as I know WCAT doesn't carry High School Basketball - last high school sport they broadcast was football.

Why on God's green Earth wouldn't they? They carried BHS-Rice last winter. There's plenty of Pats chatter this weekend, but what else are they going to air on Friday nights the rest of the winter? Do they really think that a syndicated ESPN show on Friday night is more relevant than a high school game?

I don't know if it's more relevant or not, but it's probably a budget based decision. I would say that ESPN seems to be pretty successful for syndication, well at least more than Air-America.
