Musk Calls for NPR and PBS Defunding

Wow! I am impressed by such thorough research. But I was talking about 2007 when Obama was running for his first term.

Better late than never NPR. 😊
Why would anyone care whether or what Obama smoked or didn't smoke? Again, if these "scoops" would have exposed him as a hypocrite had he been campaigning on an anti-tobacco or anti-marijuana platform, I can see a radio news organization airing them. But a relatively young man who's trying to quit smoking the former and smoked the latter as a teen? That's not news. That's "human interest" fluff, unworthy of a serious news organization.

I wish people wouldn't call it Fox. Fox is the home of "The Masked Singer", "The Simpsons" and "Animal Control". It is not a news station. Well, neither is the other one ..
Fox News oversees local news at Fox owned and operated stations, operates a cable news network and provides a news service to radio stations.

Please read my OP. As I said, it was a trivial example to make a point.
The point is that NPR wasn't purposely withholding the "news" about Obama being a smoker to make him look good. Fox News was purposely pushing it to make him look bad. Just like their outrage about his tan suit and coffee cup salute.

yeah no.. im pretty sure fox news doesnt oversee local news at fox owned and operated stations

The state of North Dakota is proposing to defund its state public broadcasting system.

That means they would lose both federal and state funding.

A similar situation is happening in the Arkansas State Legislature to defund their PBS affiliate.

They needed to pay for that $19,000 lectern somehow...

our state has veto'd state funding for public radio for 10 years, but they dont own any of the stations.

They do however own 200 plus tv translators, many of them digital..... fed from anchorage with a conglomeration of programming, the day is shared with the local affiliates of nbc, cbs, fox, pbs......

This is the same line of thinking that has predominated in radio for the past 20 years: Cut local services. You can call it the iHeart-ism of government. This is what happens when you run government like a business. They cut local services because they're unprofitable. Not because they're not needed. The reason public radio was started was because commercial radio was driven by profit, not service. They never expected that government would be driven by basically the same thing. They say public radio isn't needed because you can subscribe to internet radio. You don't need PBS to entertain your kids. You can subscribe to streaming TV.

The people of these states are already familiar with their commercial stations cutting back on local staffing and news. Now the public stations are doing the same thing. The bad news is they're not stopping with defunding public radio. Next stop is public education. They want to get government out of the education business. After that, it's insurance and social security. Government will no longer provide public services. Everything is a business that you pay for directly. I wonder what the governors and other local politicians are going to use as campaign issues once they eliminate everything that government did.

If the MAGA crowd wants to defund everything, they should privatize the U.S. Military.

Want to annex Canada by force? Put it up for bid by private militias. Want to retake the Panama Canal? Same thing. Want to invade Greenland? Choose the private militia that can do it for the cheapest price.

To tie this into broadcasting, perhaps AFRTS should be funded by commercials. Perhaps those private militias could buy time.

True and where will red states find “Reliable News” too when that happens. We looked at major cities in Texas and their radio ratings and their local NPR affiliates they are within the top 5-10 spots in their local markets. This data partially disproves the stereotype that people listen to Doge/maga rants. Some of this also involves in state funding and local donors in addition to CPB funding. The most famous argument mentioned here is that Texas gets a certain portion of Ex-California residents because their Employers move their main office or open branch offices in the states major cities. Not everybody in red states are like Elon Musk or Donald Trump as seen here.

Or merge AFR with VOA.

Being pedantic here, its AFN now

But They cant run commercials.

They do get programming from some statewide commercial networks for their radio and tv networks. But with sports and other stuff, they fill spot breaks with local psa's and command info.. opsec and other stuff.
