Must Carry?

I was channel surfing last night and saw a "must carry" editorial on a local newscast that isn't affiliated with Sinclair. Is this common?

When there is an active carriage dispute, I've seen these kinds of things. Of course, when there is an active dispute the audience who probably is the intended target probably isn't watching the station.

You mean when KRON a Nexstar station in San Francisco airs a 1 minute infomercial in the middle of programming? Is that must carry? I seen like 1 minute infomercials on KRON even in the middle of the newscast.

Any more specifics?

After listening and watching for a few seconds and realizing that it was a "Trump Is Always Right" type editorial, I tuned out/off. The guy looked like someone I saw in a story about Sinclair and their rules about how their stations "must carry" their editorials.

But what station are you talking about? There is no way to know if it's "must carry" without knowing the station. Who was the person doing the editorial? A few specifics would help us answer your question.

No. A out-of-town station [ 60.1 ] in, I believe Berks County, aired the editorial at the end of their news broadcast. If Sinclair is aired here in the Philadelphia area, it's on an OTA Digital Sub-channel.

And who was doing the editorial?

Looking at the schedule for WBPH (Channel 60.1 from Bethlehem), I'm thinking you might have seen an editorial or commentary on CBN Newswatch.

I don't see any programs on their schedule that look like they come from Sinclair, so this might not be the kind of "must carry" segment that you've heard so much about recently.

My mistake. It was 69.1 in Berks county.

My mistake. It was 69.1 out of Berks county. I don't know the guy's name, but I saw a story about Sinclair and their must carry rules on editorials. I believe it was the same man they showed in the story.

Boris Epshtyen is seen 3x a week on my local news (KIMA Yakima, yes a Sinclair station) and I shut it off long before he starts talking. Local news is supposed to be local news, community events and weather, especially in this small market. I don't think it's supposed to be a political mouthpiece from Washington, D.C. This wasn't the case when they were owned by Retlaw or even Fisher years ago.

FCC has no rules when it comes to commentaries on local news so Sinclair can put conservative commentaries on the air since there is no rules.

Wait Marantha Broadcasting the owners of WFMZ airs Mark Hyman segments or Boris Epstyen segments from Sinclair?

I just checked the photos of both men and neither were the guy I saw, so maybe i'm getting my editorialists confused. It's possible, as I am recovering from multiple strokes. The man talking was older, like what a stereotypical Republican would look like. Don't flame me, just my opinion.

Not sure if your question was ever answered, but based on what I'm reading about the station and its ownership, it sounds different from what Sinclair does as a company-wide thing. This sounds like a local decision made by someone at the station. Unless it was within their syndicated programming.
