Mutual(MBS) Television

Was wondering, what if Mutual had decided to go into television? Would they have been able to pull it off, or would they have ended up like DuMont?

I suspect they would have these stations as starters:

WOR-New York
WGN-Chicago
KHJ-Los Angeles
CKLW-Detroit(this of course would be befor Cancon rules)

Thoughts?

Most likely would have gone the way of DuMont. While they would have a better chance of getting TV licenses with their radio broadcasting background like NBC and CBS than the trouble DuMont went through, UHF was only in its infancy and outside of NYC, LA and Chicago there weren't enough VHF stations around for the other major metros like Cleveland, Washington, Philadelphia etc. Of course if ABC had failed then Mutual would be a player.

As it was, Mutual did consider a television network
with WOR as its flagship station, but decided it was
too expensive.

..."Mutual Television" was also used as a business name for a couple of Bob & Ray's characters on radio. Considering how they moved around from CBS to NBC to WOR to WINS to WHN and so on, it made sense to use a bogus business name instead of identifying the character as being with the real-life TV outfit co-owned with wherever they were at a time ;-) ...

At the risk of being historically inaccurate in terms of eras... ;D

Mutual would have had a real swingin' house band:
Bee Doop and the Switching Tones.

I miss the Mutual Bee Doop. When I watch Larry King on CNN, I keep expecting the tone to hit when he goes into breaks.
