MXL Mics...

When building cables I prefer to work with Neutric connectors. Nothing wrong with Switchcraft at all that I know of, I just have a harder time working the wires into them and soldering for some reason.

Switchcraft A3M's & A3F's are a bit more challenging to put together than the Neutrics. They sure beat the hell out of the ITT Cannon connectors that were popular before the "new" Switchcraft designs came along. Everything is relative. Since the late 1960's, Switchcraft has more or less a "standard." Once you get used to soldering them, they are quite easy to deal with.

Neutric came along relatively recently, probably within the last 10-12 years or so. They have learned from the mistakes of others and have a huge market share as a result. There is a new series of Switchcraft connectors that is similar to the Neutric. You might like them. Both are good companies and they both make quality products.
 
I have a soft spot for Neutrik. As goofy as it sounds, they just a have good "feel". Can't explain it.

Off Topic..The MONSTER ULTIMATE USB cable is the ONLY USB cable that eliminates the hard drive whine in a MAC Pro Tools system using an M-Box2..believe me I bought and tried everything..Don't know whay it works, but it is a very high quality and well shielded cable. If people can;t find them available anywhere it's cause I have three cases of them here...(hhoooooo)

I swapped the Mullard I had in my V69 for a Siemens. Incredible! Big, clean and airy. Your Telefunkens would put your V69 in the same league. It's great!

Lee..you had a Mullard in the V69? Mine had an MXL branded Chinese tube. We put ECC81 Telefunkens in all of the 960's and in the V69's they make a WORLD of difference. Gettin' kinda dicEy to find, AND with some of the older tubes you need to take a Dremel (tm) tool, and carefully remove some of the oxidation.

Jeff,

The original tube was the MXL cheapo Chinese tube, and it was fizzy and smeary and the highs had a bizarre metallic ring. I put a mid-60s Mullard in and the highs smoothed out and everything became more focused and quieter. I also tried a '59 RCA black plate 6201 (too dark) and a '63 GE (not hi-fi enough). I took a gamble on a 1960 Siemens ("the poor man's Telefunken") and the gamble paid off.

Okay..THAT'S where that weird "ring" we were hearing is coming from..Man that drove me nuts after Emmett brought it up. WHY does MXL do that? I know it must be to maintain price point, but hell, a 50 tube and a 60 increase in price would make a WORLD of difference..as far as I can tell.

BTW the Telefunken 12AX7 (ECC83) in the Universal Audio M610 is a keeper and a half! S=m=o=o=o=t=h=e!
