My 102.5....

OK, I am probably one of the biggest fans and supporters of My 102.5's bright AC format, but I'm a little baffled. It's still probably my favorite station in the market, but...

They keep saying "fresh new sound", but have added NO new "current" songs since they launched 3 weeks ago. None, zero. Magic has even added two. Their heaviest/"current" rotation includes "Haven't Met You Yet" and "Bad Romance", both '09 hits. They're rotating 11 "currents", two of which are the ones I mentioned. The purpose behind the fresh AC format is to be ahead of the traditional AC format/competitor, but not as aggressive on new material as the hot AC format. I'm trying to figure out exactly what they are, fresh AC is the closest thing I can think of (like WWFS) If they want to promote themselves as fresher/more modern than Magic, they're gonna have to step up and be on top of the newer stuff on the AC chart.

I just want them to program properly so this can have a shot at success, since it sounds good overall, but the issue with currents is concerning.

my interpretation of fresh new sound was that it was a fresh new sound for that frequency and not that they were trying to fall into a specific format bucket

This is why I absolutely "don't get" and will never listen or work in A/C. I don't care about it's potentially huge audience or it's demographics. Whew, o-k. Man, glad I got that off my chest. Whew, again.

I agree, but with what they're doing, being a little more aggressive with the new stuff would not hurt them. Not extremely (like a full Hot AC, which I initally thought they were) to where you freak the listeners out but enough to clearly sound more on top of new music than the main competition, which is Magic.

@Al Timiter: I don't like the extreme repitition of a lot of AC stations and the new songs, either. Seems like they stick with 5 or 6 and wear them out (Magic rotates five in current rotation and they play approximately 4x a day each) forever before adding something else new. Magic played "Hey, Soul Sister" as a current for a year. I prefer the Hot AC variation of the format much more, but realize this market probably could not support it.

Does My 102.5 sound anything like Fresh 102.5 KEZK - St. Louis? As they are more of a regular AC compared to sister Fresh 102.7 which is more of a Hot AC in NYC.

Much more aggressive and modern than KEZK. All of the older stuff and even until a year or so old sounds Hot AC. They just don't really program off of the Hot AC chart and don't play as many currents.

probably smart not to be too aggressive on currents and only play the hits the change of that station is drastic enough and probably waiting on 98.9 to react.

Why should 98.9 react? They are doing better before My 102.5 tweaked their format in the ratings. I do see that Magic is somewhat not as lite as some AC stations. Looks like 98.9 doesn't go back to far in their music. Not sure how far they go back. But I feel a AC should be 70s to today. Overall Magic looks good, wouldn't mind having that format down hear by the beach.

I don't care for some of the songs 98.9 plays, but I am not in the demo. They have been doing well and have potential new listeners, so I don't see any reason for them to change it. They're running liners like "always making room for new listeners", "welcome", promoting that they are the only station to hear X, etc. I think that is all of the reaction we will get from them for now. Agree that they are not a very old AC, they play one 70s every other hour while My 102.5 was playing three every hour before they changed. Guess the market didn't like the older lean.
