My 103.9 CHR or Hot Ac

Are they actually a true CHR now, I got to hear the station briefly, but it was just the usual Modern/Hot AC format, kinda reminded me of the old Star 94.1, Anyone remember that station? Still, much better than WMEE though,,,, WMEE should be SHOT for pretending to be a CHR,,,, Its a PURE AC STATION, even softer than WTPI INDIANAPOLIS, nothing HOT about it. Who the Heck is gonna listen to all these Darned AC stations in F.W ONE MORE THING,,, who owns My 103.9, if its a sister station to one of the Rhythmics, that could explain the lack of Urban music heard.

WYLT/My103.9 is part of Summit City radio, and yes, they are a sister station to WNHT/Wild 96.3, which is Rhythmic/CHR. So the argument that they don't want to dilute too much of Wild's audience makes sense, as you suggested. I haven't had a chance to hear the station since they started to lean more CHR-ish, so I haven't a clue at all what they're playing, or if they might be dayparting some of their music.

The station sounds like an Adult CHR, which is basically a CHR station without much (if any) urban product (50 Cent. et. al.). They do play some stuff like Pon de Replay and some cuts from Destiny's Child, however. I highly doubt they're doing this to keep from cutting into Wild's pie, as I know of several clusters in other markets that have a CHR/Rhythmic and a CHR/Pop in the same group. They probably chose this path to serve those that want a hipper sounding station than WMEE or WAJI (ZZZzzzZZZzzzZZZzzz) but don't quite want nothing but hip hop like on Wild or Hot.

I talked with a WMEE employee and they told me the station is consulted by Gary Berkowitz http://www.garyberk.com/ who specialises in consulting Hot AC and Mainstream AC stations. I think WMEE sounds less Hot AC than MAJIC and judging by the ratings, less Hot AC is what Fort Wayne radio listeners want.

There could be an argument made for that but you have to consider something: WMEE has heretage. People tend to put heretage stations down be default, whether they're actually listening to them or not. WMEE used to be Fort Wayne's CHR station back in the day... here's an example: A listener could be listening to Magic or My 103 but put down WMEE because that's what they've always done. It does happen... alot.

I find it hard to believe that anyone under the age of 35 could listen to WMEE outside of work. The station is ZZZzzzZZZzzzZZZzzzZZZzzz... sorry, I fell asleep just thinking about it. In a word: Bland. Too much Chicago and Phil Collins for my taste.

WMEE is a station that's more or less "aged" with its audience, I think. Bottom line is that they still sell, they still get numbers... don't fix it if it's not broken, I guess. Kind of makes you wonder why Federated hasn't considered putting Charlie Butcher or some of the other old-timers back on the air over there.

To add to your point, Magic is heritage as well... though its heritage is its association as an AC station. They've grown to be a bit more Hot AC-ish in recent years, compared to years back when they were more conservative sounding and WMEE was pretty much straight up CHR. Both stations are now going head to head, as they have the last few years since WMEE abandoned the "hard rock and rap". It's interesting to note, I've been told that before Magic was Hot AC or even AC, I believe they were CHR as well... although I'm sure the calls and positioner were different for the station in those days. Someone a little older than me will have to provide some insight into that story.

That sounds like it might be right... I had it in my head that there was a Q in the calls somewhere. If I remember right, those calls stuck around for a while after the flip to AC before they were changed to WAJI (mid-80's?)

Close...but I'm smoking the cigar.

Originally WOWO-FM (experimental).

For years, WPTH (FM counterpart to WPTA-TV.) Rock 95, WPTH.

Then just 95FM. Still WPTH.

Then WFWQ. 95Q....Feel It. CHR lean...Charly Butcher's first station in Ft. Wayne.

THEN WAJI....Majic...AFTER WMEE stopped being Magic 97. But that's a whole nother story.
