MY 2 CENTS, FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH

First off, I was a hater when hatin' wasn't cool. ;D

Russ would have to be a fool to not see this writing on the wall, even two or three years ago...and hopefully for his sake, he banked away money just in case. You just don't draw that kind of salary and see your contemporaries getting fired left and right for making too much money, and not worry about the same for yourself. EVERYBODY'S vulnerable, especially the more money you make...and no one's sacred anymore. And I don't see Russ popping up at ANY station, anytime soon, if ever. He won't work for the wages the industry pays now, and won't disgrace himself by taking whatever's out there. He's also damaged goods for now after all the bad PR around his alledged "incidents." That's a real tough spot to be in, to try to save face and ego and keep your value up, when there's no takers at your asking price. Don't believe me? Check the stock prices. NO big contracts are being written, and it will be a sad day when Dorsey's and Hal's and Jody's contracts come due...they'll either re-enlist at the going rate, or retire. But you never know the value of desperation...Russ now has two mortgages to pay, and trying to sell an oversized albatross in this market...?

And all that talk about going to XM, and when the RMS was tried in Austin...Neither worked or would have worked because Russ's calling card was that he was live and local. The Pleasant Grove references don't play well elsewhere...and if you take those things out, and fill it with whatever, you get something like the diluted Kidd Kraddick we hear now--where he had to take out all the local stuff to force the show to have universal appeal. It's just not the same product.

And considering when Ben-n-Skin started, don't you figure that 105.3 had planned to do this format switch earlier, but when Russ's legal issues came up, CBS probably decided to hold off, since dumping Russ at that point might have construed that they were dumping a person for being guilty before proven innocent. Talk about a lawsuit waiting to happen.

As for the new format, all I heard yesterday was a lot of voices that sounded barely post-pubescent. I know it's easy to hire kids for cheap and to perhaps find a real passionate one for every 50 you hire, but sheesh, don't staff the whole station with them. The Ticket gets away with Corby (? Colby?) being a kid because he's surrounded by vets who have a lot of fun at his expense. (And boy oh boy, did I accidentally call that one right on my Sunday evening post...that Fox Sports would be tied in with a new sports format at 105.3. )

Lord love 'em, Russ played this schtick to the hilt, made a great living at it, was very successful with it (to a point,) but all things must end. And yes, sure, the haters are going to come out of the woodwork. Russ stepped on a LOT of toes to get where he got.

I think you are right. I don't see any other company taking on Russ at this point. I thought maybe The Eagle for Russ, but I don't think Clear Channel will take him on. I think he is pretty much done. The only other possiblity is The Bone, but there again, they might not want to take him on. That would be funny if he wound up where Pugs and Kelly are. We just migh have seen the last of Russ. As far as JD goes, he will find a new home and seperate himself from Russ. I have met JD, very nice guy. He will land on his feet.

I totally agree with you guys. Russ is done (overdone?) and won't be on the air ever again. I don't know whether to laugh at or feel sorry for the listeners who think this is all a bit and that Russ will be back. These people are probably the same ones who think Russ' current legal issues are a bit. Russ indeed appeals well to the LCD, end of story.

And Mike is correct that no one is sacred in this business anymore. Look what happened to Bass at KEOM. The guy was there for what, 20+ years and suddenly he's gone. Sad...

I wouldn't advise the youth of today to get into radio. That is unless you want to live from paycheck to paycheck. Radio isn't fun anymore.

Russ haters have changed

Russ lovers have become haters

And the 105.3 fans feel betrayed right now. Not a great choice of doing this all of a sudden.

I agree with you MS914

I tell young'uns these days that, if they want to do radio, do it PART-TIME. Don't make it your regular gig. Get a real job instead for income, and do radio as a hobby! (Or, like me, do your PT gig for FREE if you love it that much. :) )

Oh, the list is long and growing daily of overpaid talent losing their jobs. No reflection on their talents or abilities or anything, just budgetary cuts that have left some good folks out on the streets: Dan Potter, Cindy Scull, Robert B. McIntire in Houston (40 years at KILT until last week,) Mary Rose, Sandi Sharp, the Twister crew, a couple of folks from KSCS a few months back, the list goes on and on. Just reading some of the high-profile names on Radio Daily News every day who are losing their longtime gigs in much larger markets...yeah, the writing's on the wall.

And it's sad, too, to do this kind of cutting at Christmastime. Nobody's got a conscience anymore.

Mike, you are truly wise, why arent you writing a columns or running your own blog is a question we all would like answered. I agree, the "pleasant grove/white trash mentality" schtick got old with me and alot of folks real quick, as it takes a decent medium and flushes it down the crapper. Im not expecting something of the quality of a Radio4 or NPR, but id like to hear something more constructive on the air than about drinking a pabst and getting orally satisfied by some redneck chick without any teeth. While im not trying to play the morality police, I think he could've engaged his listeners minds, as well as made them laughed.

As for the rest of the gang, the production staff will land on their feet as well as JD, who would fit into any local country station that would have him, as he has a good rep around town.

I didn't see Mike make a white trash reference and doubt he would. Why did you?

I concur with Slam that you are indeed wise beyond your...er, wise.

I do think Russ will appear elsewhere but it may be that he'll have to try his luck in a market other than DFW.

Uh, if you listened to the show for any length of time, it would always go back to his white trash upbringing in pleasant grove in one form or another, which people got tired about hearing consistantly

Corby Davidson is pushing 40 and has been with the Ticket since year 1. I would hardly call him a "kid".

Corby just sounds young because his voice is so high-pitched. I had the opposite problem...sounded 10-15 years older than I was. If I'd known then what I know now... :)

My question is, Did Russ say anything Friday like he might have known that this was the end of the road?

He was talking about the Christmas party not happening and said "I'm goin back to Clear Channel, They know how to treat a feller". I know that was schtick that Russ through out a lot but it seemed like clarvoyence in the hind site. I'm sure he had no clue. Which make you wonder how long Gavin knew and how many of those meetings he was at over the past few weeks/months were actually about this change.

He also joked with JD about not having job security..... they knew.

I missed that. I would hope they knew and had plans for the aftermath, but in a blog Clo wrote on his myspace page he states that it hit them like a bad dream. So maybe he didnt know and its very possible Russ and JD did. I dunno. Im just a spectator in this debacle.

Ok so he gets to sit around until 2011 and get paid for it through his contract. My question is, is there a no compete clause that would prevent him from net-casting from his house?? He could charge a monthly fee with a certain % going to the foundation, possible make enough to pay some of the old crew to come in and do that for a few years. He could conceivably even get some adverts couldn't he?? Hell if I were him I'd even do it during afternoon drive just to be a thorn. The other thing, I can imagine there is a way to get the stream in a car, through iphone or the like so folks could still listen in their cars. As wireless networks get more penetration (if clo was here he'd laugh) and overlap, it will become easier and easier to just listen to online content and forget the dial.

my 2.37 cents

jason, the technology is there for web broadcasting (voice/video) as well as narrowcasting to wireless devices. If he wanted to do it from home, he would need a decent pipe (i.e. connection) coming out of his home and someone to host said boxes (web/media servers) to allow him to stream. I would wonder if there was a "clause" in his current contract that prevents non-compete on web...

Just check with Don Sierra from Russ Martin dot info.

Would not surprise me, yeah he may be between a rock and hard place, get paid or let his pride over take him and say screw the money and broadcast. I wonder if the no compete applies to the exact format?? Maybe he could do a "car" show built around his repair shop?? with typical RMS humor thrown in??

Oh well time will tell.
