my 2 cents on the WILD flip and a prediction

For many years,Boston has never had an FM RnB station.

WILD-FM became JUST THAT!

Now there is NO rhythmic station of any kind in Boston (94.5 plays ONLY RAP!)

My prediction = BCN will flip to some kind of urban format ,perhaps even dance oriented They could call it CLUB 104.1 the NEW WBCN

BCN? Rhythmic? Dance? Are you on meds?

NO!

Their ratings seem to be in the toilet so why not try something different.

Did you check the ratings today? WILD-FM beat WBCN, again! WBCN is performing the worst of the CBS cluster. If WILD-FM wasn't worth holding onto, how do you justify WBCN's performance?

I don't know about the prospects for " Club BCN"
But one thing for sure, they sure dropped the ball at 5:30 with the horrible audio.
( Very Low Volume, and stereo that sounds mono) WAAF 107.3 sounds better in West Somerville than 97.7!!
Sure, WILD 97.7 is only 2000 watts but the HAAT and the tower's proximity to downtown
doesn't factor in the lousy sound
If engineering doesn't do something about the sound problem fast, then BCN will not have anything to worry about

Yeah, BCN will go to an RnB format, cause WILD was doing so well with it...
get a clue

I have a feeling that since BCn just added O&A and Toucher and Rich, they won't be flipping to a dance format anytime soon. Infact my gut tells me they won't flip at all

WBCN sure ain't doing well with rock. It's going to change regardless of the format. And facts are facts, WILD-FM kicked WBCN in the ratings this past book.

not in the 18-34 they didn't. not even in the same time zone. not even close. get a clue
and get some facts.

no one is going to flip to wild's format here. too much pressure on corporate radio to put out mass appeal programming. on all the big signal stations in town which are all owned by corporate media. wcrb was the last big station owned by a smaller player and that's now gone to greater media. none of the big 4 here will flip to latin or urban AC or anything else that doesn't bring in that kind of ad money to keep wall street or shareholders happy.

radio one could afford to sit on a smaller 97.7 signal for a few years and then flip it for a nice return because they never had a cluster here that they needed or wanted to grow.
they weren't in it for any long term plan. they knew they couldn't afford to expand in boston because they don't have that kind of cash or experience as a company. they're a self-proclaimed urban specialist. boston area is not exactly an urban market. they could never pull it off here programming non-urban formats.

WILD-FM "kicked BCN's butt" in the ratings.

In what? 12+? Meaningless.

Demos. What were the demo rankings of both? Tell me, please. THAT is the name of the game.

Color it how you want, WILD does better than WBCN. And don't be so arrogant. Not all of us have aribtron books in front of us. For sake of conversation we cite 12+ because that's what's available. But even if I did have the age demos in front of me to quote, WILD would still kick ass in the younger demos. That's urban radio. And THAT is the name of the game.

Ciao,

You totally got it wrong and HHH got it right. I DO have the ratings right in front of me and BCN pretty much trounces WILD in their core demo - 18-34...it's not even close. Sure for the sake of conversation you quote 12+ because it is all that you have in front of you, but now that you've been clued in on something more accurate why can't you back down a little and admit that you may be wrong?

Besides, most of you all got something else wrong. Ratings are important, but to the mother ship, billing is EVERYTHING and I would bet that BCN outbilled WILD by a ratio sizeably larger than that of their ratings advantage...probably 5:1 or even higher, and that's what really counts to the corporate bean counters.

So which is it? First the naysayers harped on WILD's includion of Hip hop to attract young people saying that it alienated the old folks. Then in the same breath the station is critized for not having enough younger listeners and skewing too old. So which is it? Perfect example of how a product aimed at black folks is damned if it does, damned if it doesn't. Please tell me, what other radio station in Boston is put to this much scrutiny?
