I'm hearing Houston based Terri Thomas, PD of Radio One's My 92.7, KBXX The Box Houston, and KROI Praise 92.1 Houston will be doing on air on My927. She's in town and will be doing old school mixes on the station. Not sure all the details. But I wanna know, what are your opinions of the new My 92.7? I think Fly Ty was a great pic for afternoon show. I'm glad they're allowing the personalities to show some 'personality', although I think Elroy & Praise do a better job at that, and Terri can learn a lil somethin' somethin'. They still have some issues to work out, but it's competitive. I think the 'mini mixes' were a very creative idea, and brings life to the station. I know they still have some things planned which they haven't implemented, but overall, I'm impressed. I still think they need to step their community involvement up, get out the clubs and get in the streets. CBS and WBAV are very vulnerable right now, and I think if R1 does it right, they can be overtaken. Thoughts??
 
interesting that you would ask about My 92.7. I decided to check out their mix show Friday night on the way to work so I heard from around 9:00 until 9:30, and it was horrible. I expected old school, all I heard was semi rap tunes. Is Stacy Blackman still doing this show? I know he is better than this was. Technically, it was OK put the music programming/selection was terrible. I just kept wondering what demo they were aiming this mess at. The mix shows on V 101.9 sound much better to me. just my opinion, but My and Radio one are lost in Charlotte and I don't think they will ever amount to much.
 
Yes, Stacey does the Friday mixes. I have never understood Quiet Storm in a mix, that's basically what they're doing. I have to agree with u, the music does seem a little random. V's music seems random too. Both stations are all over the place musically. I'd rather hear all over the place than focused and never changing. That's what it was when Alvin was programming the station, it sounded good, well no it sounded more like a station is supposed to, more focused but the music never changed, it was too stale and predictable, and for real it just put me to sleep. I like the energy of the new 92, and the jocks, and the creativity. V's gotten too comfortable and I'm getting tired of the jocks saying the dumbest and corniest things and people just eat it up. Terri Thomas is original and can think outside the box, Terri Avery follows trends. I think 92 can give 101 a run for their money if they step their game up and get into the community. I don't know, we'll see...
 
I guess Stacey is following management's direction as far as what he is mixing. I enjoyed listening to him live from the club on Wilkinson Blvd, guess he had more control over what he played at that point. I agree My and V and are a bit all over the place with the music, never quite understood that, seems that when they put calls on the air like I heard on My 92.7 Friday night the people are asking for old school or in this case Betty Wright liquor house music. I would vote for Clean Up Woman myself! I'll keep checking out My and will certainly give them a chance, I hope the changes and the energy / creativity you speak of helps My 92.7 show some gains here. I agree, we shall see. thanks.
 
Can CBS really be overtaken? 92.7's signal is very limited compared to 101.9's.

I'm not familiar with the format though, but just looking at the coverage and that tells a lot. Interesting discussions.
 
They've done it before, back in like 2004, Radio One bought Tom Joyner's show and stole it from V101.9, V dropped to 15th and Q, which had just flipped from Hot, a CHR format, to UAC jumped to 3rd. V tried going local with Jaye Delai in the morning, but the ratings dropped even further, until V finally got onboard with Steve Harvey about a year later and ratings rose again, while Q's fell off. So it can be done, but the question is, can Radio One do it?? Terri Thomas, the PD, programs two stations in the top 3 in Houston, although R1 is the only Urban game in town. The signal makes it that much harder though.
 
How's the signal in the city itself? In Rochester, NY, WDKX-FM, a locally-owned station with similar programming and appeal is a consistent Top 5 performer rating-wise in spite of a lesser signal and less than perfect market coverage.

Their transmitter is located on top of the city's tallest office tower in the center of downtown. That gives them all the coverage they need to reach their core audience and turn in great ratings book after book, year after year.
 
I'm in west Charlotte and I don't have any problem picking up the signal there or when I'm traveling thru the city. It can be spotty in some places in south Charlotte, but south Charlotte is predominately white, so not really a problem. It's a 6,000 watt signal. I have never had a problem picking up V101.9, they got a 100,000 watt blowtorch, it's one of the best signals in the market and you can sometimes get it all the way down in Charleston. Praise has a 5,200 watt signal and I have more trouble picking it up, but it outranks 92.
 
100.9 (Praise) is going to naturally outrank 92.7 because they have pretty much no competition. I think My92.7 can do better - hopefully with some new management they will. It'd be some good to see some good competition between 92.7 and 101.9.
