My AM Band (530-1700) - night & daytime...

gr8oldies said:
I was aware of the pattern change, just mentioning I have heard them, though weakly, on night pattern.

Yes they do go somewhat NE at night as I often hear them in Northern Illinois & almost never hear Buffalo.

Here's a "mini-bandscan" from my week here on the Gulf coast.  Alabama-Florida border on the beach Perdido Key...technically part of Pensacola.  Receivers are an Eton E-10, Yacht Boy 400PE, and a Sony SRF 37. I call it a "mini-bandscan" because essentially these are the highlights, or perhaps more correctly, the basic stuff.  The frequencies not mentioned are either empty or inidentified.
Daytime

540:  WFLF  Very weak
550:  Supposed to be a semi-local here, but I'm not hearing it.  The old Atmore, AL station used to be weak to fair.
560:  WOOF Very weak
580:  Something very faint here.  I always try for WDBO when I'm in these parts, but whatever I'm hearing is unintelligible
590:  Panama City (FL).  Nostalgia station....weak....more so than in previous years.  Cloud company not maintaining the xmtr?
600:  WVOG:  Fair-Weak
610:  WVTG: Weak...as is just about everything licenced to P-cola
620:  Tampa: Fair. strongest of the saltwater path signals from Tampa-St. Pete
640:  KTIB:  Weak
660:  Mobile Fair-Weak....despite the fact that I'm less than 30 miles from a 10KW non-directional stick.
670:  Cuba
690:  WIST: Fair
710:  WNTM winning the battle with the Cuban....but barely
750:  New Orleans Fair-Weak
790:  WPNN: Another Pensacola "weakling"
800:  WSHO:  Fair....stronger than WPNN
820:  Tampa:  Weak-Fair
830:  Norco, LA....Fair-Weak
840:  WMOB:  Fair-Weak
860:  Tampa area:  Very weak
870:  WWL:  Good
940:  WYLD:  Fair-weak
970:  WFLA:  Very weak
980:  Pensacola:  Weak....used to be stronger than it is now.  Audio used to be better, too.
990:  New Orleans:  Weak
1000:  Robertsdale, AL:  Semi-Local  Weak
1040:  Tampa area:  Weak
1060:  New Orleans:  Fair
1070:  Cantonement, FL (Pensacola area):  Fair-Good.  Big power boost here.  Forget how much, but at least 10kw getting the job done.
1120:  Destin FL: Very weak
1190:  WBSL:  Fair:  Good blues music mix here.  (Bay Saint Louis, MS)
1220:  Fairhope, AL: 1kw ND 25 miles away but weak to very weak
1230:  Pensacola:Weak-Fair. Better than most of the other P-cola stations.  Catholic radio...maybe they're using holy water in ground system.
1260:  Fort Walton Beach: Fair
1280:  New Orleans:  Weak-Fair
1290:  Panama City: weak but stronger than 590
1310:  WHEP: Fair  Semi-Local.  2.5kw stick is about 14 miles from where I am.
1330:  WEBY:Good  Best signal here.  Stick is on opposite side of P-cola bay with 25KW aimed into the salt water and right at me.
1350:  New Orleans:  Fair.  Just a tad more oomph than 1280 for some reason
1360:  Mobile: Fair  Religious broadcaster getting lots out of a little stick.  Bayside location in a salt marsh doesn't hurt.
1370:  WCOA...Fair.  Another station owned by the cloud company.  Another signal that used to be better than it is now
1400:  Fort Walton Beach: Weak  Radio-Locator says this should be strong.  Definitely not!
1430:  Panama City:  Weak
1450:  WBSR:  Weak...weakest Pensacola signal
1470:  Tampa area:  Weak-Fair...signal is second only to 620
1480:  Battle between Mobile and Panama City with neither winning (or losing)
1580:  Pascagoula, MS:  Weak
1600:  Port Sulphur, LA:  Fair  "The Ragin' Cajun"
1620:  WNTP: Weak-fair  Pensacola x-bander doing relatively well.

I'll try to do nighttime later.

"620: Tampa: Fair. strongest of the saltwater path signals from Tampa-St. Pete"

Do you hear any trace of Jackson underneath. When I lived in Ocean Springs, MS (just across the bay from Biloxi), Tampa was by far the dominant station on the frequency. But Jackson could be heard faintly underneath.

None whatsoever. WJDX has a fine signal, and I've listened for it, but have never heard it here in the daytime. IME, Tampa owns the channel just about all the way to New Orleans....although 'JDX is audible on the MS gulf coast, as you say.

Speaking of 'JDX, I've heard it several times under WTMJ in the Chicago area (not recently). Usually around sunrise/sunset on day pattern. But I've also heard it at night as well. IMHO, one of the best stations anywhere during most of the '70s.

Interesting in that I've had the opposite experience. I have yet to hear KOMA from my northern Chicago 'burb; but have picked up WWKB from Buffalo. Now, out by the Mississippi River in western IL, I have picked up KOMA.

That's what's beautiful about AM skip--you just never know.

I vacationed in the Panama City Beach back in July 2004 and this pretty much echoes what I remember.
I looked up that 1660, and the first one with Cubs baseball I found was from KQWB from West Fargo, N.D. Nice catch there. The Cubs were playing day games that week I was in PCB so I never would have heard this!
I will try add a few things:
- The 1180 you heard probably was the Cuban jammer for Marti. I heard it clearly both day AND night. I've said it before here, but I've read reports that you can be within sight of the Marti towers coming from the north (and possibly from the east and west as well) and not heard the signal, even with the aid of a salt-water path.
- The only station I ever heard on 740 down there (at night) was KTRH. Granted it was quite weak and I don't know how much further east that signal would have carried, but it was there every night.
The other Texas 50Ks were quite dependable, even with KRLD throwing most of its power away from my general direction.
- Every time I tried for WSB, 750 was completely dominated by the South American channel (can't remember if it's Colombia or Venezuela). Same for my experiences with 670, 890 and 1000. WLW was very dependable.
- 800 was complete mud. I was disappointed; in Ohio, I had read many reports of people hearing both XEROK and TWR and on my first night there, everyone else went to bed early so I had the chance to sit on the patio, smoke a cigar and DX at length. 800 might have been the first channel I tried.

Just wanted to pipe in here. The 1660 that cyberdad was hearing might well indeed be from Florida. It could be WCNZ 1660 out of Naples/Marco Island in the southwest corner of Florida. They are a True Oldies outlet normally but they do also broadcast the Chicago Cubs games. I believe that the station operates at 10,000 watts day and 1,000 watts night.

Makes perfect sense. The signal was pretty decent....as would have been the case over a fairly easy salt water path. Faded during a local break, but I did think I heard a reference to Naples. I also assumed what I was getting on 1180 would have been Cuba's answer to R. Marti.

I did not realize the Cubs had an affiliate in Naples of all places. Never would have guessed.

Yes indeed, the Cubs do have an affiliate here. They just added the Cubs games the past month or so. There are a lot of midwest transplants here in this area so they thought there might be a market for it. There is also a push locally to try to get the Cubs to relocate their spring training site to Naples in the future. So I think that also might have played in to the decision to air Cubs games here.

Another note of interest is that this station appears to have changed their format as of this morning to jazz. I am not sure how that will play on AM but I guess they are trying to build an audience.

Yup. Stayed just ahead of it, including Sunday night in Mississippi where I had a Monday appointment. In each case the showers were just starting as I was getting out of Dodge.

My Sunday night stay was a couple hundred miles north of the gulf, so I sampled a little of the available DX there. Cubans were still trouncing Chicago on 670 and 890. XEOY still kicking the snot out of WMVP, but 'GN and 'BBM were relatively good.

Northing much else of note....R. Reloj still strong on 790 and under WWL on 870. Probably the strongest of the clears was KMOX. A little surprising, given that KMOX didn't amount to much on the coast. WLAC also had a nice signal.
