92.9 WZGC "Atlanta's Party Station....ENERGY 92.9" - (Similar to SirusXM's - BPM channel)

I too would love a dance station similar to BPM or Club Phusion but unfortunately it will never happen given the ratings of dance stations that have come and gone in other markets.

There's still no traditional chr / top 40 on the list! Everything is Adult or AC.

And I think there should be a classic hip hop station on the list because I think classic hip hop would do well there! you can check out out our classic hip hop station (as far as I know, the 2nd station of this type of format to exist in this country so far), check it out; 99.3/92.7 The Beat, here: www.EnergyArizonaFm.com They do have a new website address for the new classic hip hop format, but I forgot what it was but both addresses should take you to the same page. That would be great to have a classic hip hop station in Atl.

Anyway, enough of the dirty south and classic hip hop talk. I think an electro-hip hop and house mix show program would do well on at least one rhythmic or rhythmic leaning station in Atl as well, judging from what I hear every Fri night here on KKFR (and why do I feel like the electro-hip hop and house show on KKFR was an idea stolen from the west coast syndicated Ghetto House Radio show???? hmmm...)

But back to what I was saying. A classic hip hop format, along with a pure rhythmic and a separate rhythmic lean top 40 format, just like there used to be back around 2002-2004 in Atl. would be great for Atlanta. They should mix on BOTH Fri and Sat. nights... Not sure how a churban, or latin rhythm format would do in Atl, but they could play rhythmic latin hip hop and spanish pop urbano, along with hot hits from Pitbull, Black Eyed Peas, certain Akon and lady Gaga hits, David Guetta, Jay Sean...etc. Whether they are bilingual or go completely spanish with the on air personalities, not sure which option would be best for ATL market. The latin rhythm station should also mix, too, and put all that latin house and discoteca to use.

Another great idea would be a station with a reggae / soca mix show at least once a week. Not mix live from a club on a Sat night and randomly drop in a few reggae songs in a short set every week, but a mix show featuring reggae and soca at a set time, at least one hour long, once a week on an urban format.

* And lastly, Attn: Urban & Rhythmic Radio!! there needs to be some attention given to Funky House Tunes!! I bet UK Funky would do well here, too if tried on US urbans or given a chance through scheduled specialty / dj shows! Who says the US can't try something different for a change with the way urbans are programmed? UK Funky also belongs on an urban, or at least rhythmic / r&b format. There are a lot of soulful UK Funky House songs that the U.S. is totally ignoring, and the UK producers need to stop labeling (and limiting) their sound by throwing "UK" into it all the time. That's like Puerto rico taking reggaeton and calling it P.R. Reggaeton! UK Funky (or Funky House) is already taking over London. Listen to BBC Radio 1xtra (The radio version of BET for London) and hear all the funky house tunes we're missing out on! Funky is even now surpassing Bassline and Electro-House.. Here are just a few examples of the new UK Funky urban sound that the U.S. is missing out on:

Urban Music for Urban / Rhythmic / R&B Formats! (Genre: UK Funky House)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQyGCS8gx0c

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Xi3cqcM1E

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YHC69wa9JA

Bassline in Atl? Hmm... It's worth a try in a specialty rhythmic/urban mix (Genre: Bassline)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66wOXOKdTO0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTsHWzvJWDQ

A station like Power 96 Miami could just exist and take care of many of my suggestions through the form of scheduled specialty show / dj mix shows. I think Agnes, Calvin Harris, and Cascada would be safe enough for a WPOW type mix show format. There's no reason why the American rhythmics and top 40's should be ignoring Taio Cruz!! ...and I'll just leave it at that.

Yeah. I included a true TOP-40, trust me. And it's not a bad idea, to me.
I mean how may variations of old-skool/soft R&B do we need?

See my changes to: 104.1 WALR

(I guess I should've marked the few changes in red or something)

What I'd like to see is 99x to expand on it's "talent" roster as well as it's programming. That, of course, would require money which I'm sure the lords-on-high aren't ready to part with yet.

They won't either...97.9X is hemorrhaging listeners all over the place.

The only station that proved dance music can work was Pulse 87. The only station to reach close to a million in cume and was able to crack a 1.0 with their LP signal. Unfortunately, they were at the wrong place, wrong time with their owners as they came too late to try and save Mega Media's bankruptcy. Now there is Party FM and with the demise of Pulse, half of it's audience is not bothering with Party. I hate to admit, but dance fans are bi-polar at times. Before when David Guetta & Tiesto was underground, they love them. Now that they are mainstream, I hear them say they "sold out." The only way to ever get a dance station on a terrestrial dial is to impress advertisers from big companies like McDonalds, Dominos, Coca-Cola, etc. And we all know what Dr. Pepper thinks of dance music.

One thing about the original posters prediciton...there is no way Kiss 104.1 is flipping. Kiss is Cox's #1 FM (ahead of flagship FM B98.5). Kiss is always top 5 12+. The River will be the next Cox station to flip...and I highly doubt it will be CHR.

I know people want a CHR that plays pop and rap...but as long as the market is the way it is, it will not happen. You will have to buy a station if you want a CHR that is formatted to your liking. You will need several hundred million dollars though.

As for the next flip...it will be 100.5. Whether they some sort of agreement with 680 for an FM simulcast to the Fan remains to be seen. The River is quickly losing ground to True Oldies 106.7, so that station may not have much shelf life left. 92.9 is also ripe for a flip.

And neither does Star 94. Star 94 is no longer at concerts and events...whereas Q100 is. Q100 has become the #1 CHR, and it will stay that way baring some unforseen circumstances. It would be most logical for Star 94 to go hot AC (80's, 90's, 2000's, now), but I think the damage is done...and the sweet sounds of Lite 94.1 will be coming soon.

One thing though...True Oldies 106.7 will be here to stay, baring any unforseen circumstances. I am shocked to see how successful this station has been. To put it in the words of Adam and Jamie from "Mythbusters"...the myth that oldies is not a viable radio format is BUSTED!

I have to disagree with you about True Oldies 106.7 and The River. Those 6+ numbers mean little when your audience is older than the demos most advertisers want. In 18-49, The River was #16 and True Oldies was #23. In 25-54, The River was #12 and True Oldies was #17.

I also believe that if a company with money, such as Bonneville, bought 106.7, the format would change to one with more sellable demos.

I've always wondered why ATL doesn't have a one-stop CHR. Is it because there is already a really strong urban presence elsewhere on the dial?

100.5 seems to be a dead man walking. They started with a great heritage rock format, and then they had to go and get rid of the deep cuts, 80s AOR, and bring in all the alternative. Check the ratings--I don't know how anyone could see that as having been a good move. TRG+680 on 100.5 would be a good trial for Cumulus/Dickey, especially since they will have the Braves next year on both anyway.

I don't think River will flip, especially if Rock100.5 flips first. River has been hardening up their playlist lately; they were playing AC/DC last night and Billy Idol is also on their playlist now. Sounds like they smell blood and are trying to hurt Rock100.5 as much as they can. Maybe River is shifting their format in a harder AOR direction to pick up share lost to True Oldies at the other end.

92.9 has had some of their best books in a while lately. I don't see a flip there. They almost have a 3 share when they used to struggle to get a 2. And aren't their billings quite high to boot?

Star 94 needs to quit their denial and go back to their hot AC roots.
