Having been an Indy PD in the late 90's when they were still an Adult Standards station, my arugement would be why did they change? They had a single demo and programming choice all to themsevles. You can argue whether or not the Standards format is nothing but 80 year olds waiting for their hearts to stop, but if it can be sold, then it doesn't matter what it is. I now work for a company based in Northeast Pennsylvania. Northeast PA has the oldest demo in america except for Florida. One of our stations runs the standards format and is continously in the Top 5 of the market. It can be sold, and it makes a decent amount of money, and they are the only station in the market working that demo. 1430 had that market. IMHO they were foolish to give it up and go against WIBC. First, IBC has a 50Kw signal..they have Rush and all the major conservative talkers who consistantly pull big numbers in any market they are in. If you're going after them, either you have to entice some big names, or all you will be doing is running 2nd & 3rd string talkers against proven winners. You have to gear up for a major news operation if you are to be believable. It takes a major commitment just to make a dent on a station like WIBC. Good or bad, people have been trained over the years to turn to WIBC when information is important. 1430 should have stayed with it's Standards format, tweaked it a bit, and held a demo and programming choice that no one else had.
