My Favorite FCC Action Today

As I do every non-holiday weekday, I was perusing the FCC Applications and Actions, and among the latter today was a license-to-cover for WINO, an FM in Odessa, NY. I wonder if they call themselves "Wonderful Wino"? (It's non-com near Binghampton, NY.)

The morning jock is rolls in around 9:15 because he's always hung over. DT in the morning!

Middays feature the "Brown Bag" special, which usually results in the jock slurring her words by 1pm.

Coming up later today, you're chance to win with the 5 o'clock hiccup!

Up and coming artists are referred to as grapes.

Next will come a move-in application to change the city of license to New York City, so they can move their studios to the Bowery.

New York has an East Hampton and a Westhampton and a Southampton and a Hampton Bays...but there's no "p" in "Binghamton," which is a town named after someone called Bingham.

WINO draws its calls from the wine industry that's a big part of the Finger Lakes economy, btw.

Part of me is still on the two lane highway between Ithaca and Horseheads.
And in the gorges of Ithaca.
It's a beautiful area.

Meanwhile there's a WINE in Brookfield CT serving Danbury area with sports (and, yrs ago, top 40)

Pic of station sign (prob on Rt 7? remember going by it) http://o5.aolcdn.com/dims-shared/di...torage/patch/d645b30c5279c5d0517fea967980678d

We could go into a whole spate of call letters and meanings
SKI on the SNOw in Vermont: WSKI (actually for "Winooski" River?), WSNO
Dine on LOBster in Maine (WLOB)
Green Bay plays in the (W)NFL
We Serve You Best in Rutland, VT
WBEN-FM, Philly (Mr. Franklin)
etc

That's Binghamton, not Bing-hampton! As it happens, that's where I am right now, and none of the signs have a P in them.

Oh, and Odessa is 3 counties away, at the end of Seneca Lake.

Wonderful WINO....if the records weren't free, we'd be all-news!...Sung as an off-kilter jingle...

I used to read Broadcasting magazine in our library almost every Saturday morning in the late 1970s, long before I could get my information right here at the PC.....

IIRC what is now WMNF 88.5 Tampa originally had the calls WINO, but I believe that was only as a CP (1977?).

I am sure that can be verified....
