My first HD Radio test run!

I was 100% impressed with the HD radio at Radioshack I'm sold to it! That thing sounded great, even in a metal bulding (that the Radioshack was in) I was able to pull in the stations that was about 25 miles away. The secoundary channels sounded great also. I'll be getting one soon, I was really impressed with it!

Glad you like it, but why didn't you buy it then if it is so wonderful? BTW, 25 miles isn't exactly a workable range for a lot of folks. Many of us live 60-70 miles from city centers where we do a one-hour commute to work. Do you think it will work that far? I'd be interested to hear your results.

This sounds like a commercial...

Since you say you're 100% impressed with that HD radio at Radio Shack, and that you didn't buy one, but will buy one soon, let me explain WHY to the good folks here.

The line (around the block) to buy HD radios at my Radio Shack was soooo long that they quickly sold out their supply, a supply which had been stacked to the rafters earlier in the day. The store is doing all they can to keep up with the demand. Police officers remain positioned to calm down the disappointed crowds outside the store. People keep chanting, "We want our HD radios! Give us our HD radios!" I may have to buy mine on eBay for triple the original price, but it will be worth it to hear my favorite sports talk station and their 20 minutes-an-hour of commercials screaming at me in pseudo-CD quality. The HDC codec is the best! If my new HD radio won't pick up the station, I'll just move next to their transmitter site. We love iBiquity, saviors of radio!!! Rah, rah, sis boom bah!

:D

I think a lot of people here are waiting to hear how the radio performs once you get it home. From what I remember, you have trouble with Austin locals as it is - if you succeed in receiving HD signals at your location, next try for the San Antonio and Houston HD stations and see how you do with them. A whole lot of us who are "stuck in the suburbs" would like to know if 60-70 mile HD DX is feasible with a good antenna setup.

Also - see how you do with WOAI HD. Your location would be a very good testing ground for the robustness of HD-AM. You aren't close enough to have problems with KXFR in the daytime - unless it is at sunset or sunrise, and the robustness under those heavy interference conditions would be of a lot of interest.

They let me play around with it as long as I wanted to, I cranked it up a few times on the HD-2 channels, to me, I couldnt tell any diffrents. They both sounded really good. The reason why I didnt get it that day was because I wanted to hear it first. I dont buy a new car right after I try to drive it right away. I'm also would like to see more HD-2 channels to come out. It sounded really good. I was pleased.

I have an Accurian radio. Good radio, but the HD 'technology' is severely flawed.

I can't get any HD AM signal even though the analog AM audio is near full quieting and inside 5 mV/m contour. Twice one of the HD stations kicked into HD and it sounded like crap -- ringy and distorted, like a low bitrate stream. AM is complete waste of time!

On the FM I got nothing with supplied antenna (even a cheap boom box work fine with supplied antenna). An outdoor FM yagi revealed poor results. The analog coverage is far superior to HD. With HD, you must have yagi aimed perfectly, whereas analog is more forgiving. In the presence of any analog interference the HD 'peters' out. Only about 50% of the HD stations will lock even though analog signal is clear. Tuning to adjacents where HD resides will reveal why it doesn't work. Even the slightest reception of extremely distant analog stations (eg 200 miles out) causes HD fail.

What a piece of garbage technology...

Yes, HD Radio/IBOC seems to be self-destructing - a no-win situation for iBiquity, due to HD receivers that all require elaborate antenna systems.

jras29... You sound like an easy-going person that a retailer would enjoy having as a customer! Over 25 years, I have purchased two-dozen+ radios--from a "cheapie" alt-power "crank radio" to a sophisticated McIntosh home component tuner and I-Com R-71 general coverage reciever... And these are the radios I DID NOT return. I have many favorites which I have listed here in another thread. Love them as I do, I cannot say that I'm "100% impressed" with ANY of them! They all have good qualities (and several are "classic"), but like us "2-leggers and beloved 4-leggers" alike--they ALL have a few flaws thrown in.

I have yet to find an Accurian HD Radio on display at a Radio Shack, so I will not pass judgement as I DID with the BA Receptor which I had between my hands for 10 days ("borrowed" from a dissatisfied customer who intended to return it), and that I gave various "real-world" listening and reception tests--conducted in urban, ex-urban, and rural locations. I have NEVER found a retail showroom to be a proper environment in which to judge ANY radio's potential. Granted--a mall or strip-center IS NOT "radio-friendly", but being "100% impressed" with reception of an HD FM signal at a distance that Lance Armstrong could peddle to in quick measure IS NOT a stunning endorsement of the IBOC transmission and coverage technology--especially when that station is licensed at 100kw!

My experience with HD Radio reception and dependability in the field is best summed up in audiophile's post above.

I'm not that easy ;D I would of baught it right then. Believe me I did some studing on what everyone posts on here, I havnt baught one yet. I'm going to make sure if I did get one soon, that I will be able to return it if it doesnt do its job. I can wait a little longer. I wasnt that interested in AM as much as I was on FM.

PLEASE let us know what you think. I clutched the Boston Acoutics Receptor HD with an open mind (used it for ten days). I own the mono version of it and was blown away by its audio quality and reception... I purchased 2 more as gifts ('n they like the original Receptor also)... Sadly, the HD version (while it sounds good and is "stereo" with a line input for iPod) was a big "let-down" in AM/FM reception. It is CLEARLY not worth the money (if radio is the reason)... The marketplace seems to be backing my opinion on this. Is the Accurian any different?

Here is your first post from the "sister" site that we canot mention:

"I was Very impressed with HD Radio 100%!!, I was about 25 or so miles from the Transmitter at a Radioshack, they didnt have it out of the box, but I asked them if they would take it out and let me hear it. It really sounded good. We were in a metal building also, They let me play around with it as much as I wanted to, I cranked it up a few times on HD-2 channels & the mains, that radio really sounds good. I'll be getting one pretty quick!"

And, here is your latest post:

"That radio really sounded nice on HD-1 & 2 channels, I really would like to have one like that, since I'll be able to take it outside etc. Its pretty small but really sounds good. It picked up pretty well inside the building, they used a antenna we had to move it around some. But all and all, it worked really good. I'm hoping to buy one here pretty quick. Just need to get some more payments done first."

Hmmmmmmmm....... :D

There is an old audiophile trick some HD radios and stations are doing.

The HD level is often much higher than the analog. So when it switches over the level jumps a couple dB giving the impression that louder is better.

Also the analog stereo separation on the Accurian is really poor and there isn't even a stereo light. It has good selectivity an analog side, so I suspect they using 150 or 180 kHz IF filters which reduces stereo separation too!

It's not fair to compare the HD to analog on the same radio. Hook up a known good reciever, adjust the EQ and levels so they match to do a real shoot out with Accurian. I bet HD and analog sound about the same at 96k. At 48k analog probably will sound better.

At 48k the high are starting to get warbly and like going through blades of fan. In fact a couple songs in WOMC's HD2 channel sound downright horrible. One channel almost sounded like a severly warped CD rubbing inside CD player (a repetitious scratching sound).

I think 48k is probably ok, but 32k (HD3) stereo probably isn't going to be anything to write home about.

PS From my experiences DRE sounds like a better idea...

Well, I wouldn't have been impressed 100% (plus, all the HD radios are ugly) !
