My impressions of Project 961

My girlfriend loves 961, so I finally broke down to listen over the last week. I have to say I'm surprised at how much I like the music. It's a good mix of modern rock/metal and classic stuff I remember from my teens. I enjoy the music about 75% of the time I listen. I love not hearing Skynard.

There are times when they play band after band that sound aliek (loud guitars with screamy-singing lead singer) and I change the station. I also don't care for any of their jocks. Their all very bland and non-descript. Not one has stuck in my mind and none of them have much of anything interesting to say.

The morning show is not very good. They try too hard while at the same time not knowing what it is they're doing. They have yet to entertain me or even crack a smile on my face. I tried to listen, but I really don't enjoy them.

I may be in the minority here, but I readded 96.1 to my car presets. The music was enough to get me back, at least a little bit.

Be that as it may, I will never forgive Clear Channel for getting rid of 96Rock........ .......

If I am to understand this, after listening to 961 you like some of the music and you like they don't play some music but you dislike the personalities. So why listen? Get an ipod.

I think this goes to the root of the problem with radio now. The listener can't decide what song or when the song is played yet the station is relying on the music to attract listeners? After reading this board for awhile isn't the reality that the listeners aren't really selecting songs based on what anyone wants to hear but some combination of expert analysis, record label lobbying, etc. I can't just call up and request a song that isn't in the 'playlist' can I?

It just seems to me that the ipod will win against that model every time. I can pick whatever song I like and play it whenever I like with no commercials. To me it seems the ONLY thing radio has is it's personalities, it's customer 'experience' as I think Starbucks calls it.

When 96rock went away it gave away the only link it had with it's customers. The long cultivated experience. Now it is just competition with my ipod and my ipod is always playing exactly what I want exactly when I want to hear it.

Comon, guys. There's the key; his girlfriend likes it, so he tolerates it. Of course, he's added it to his presets - if his girlfriend is going to ride in his car! Duh.
