A bit of setup, every time I get in the car, my first preset is for 530AM, so that I can start a DX scan. On Saturday Night, I was listening to WJR, at which point here in Memphis, my radio will usually land on WBBM or our local 790. Not this time...I can;t remember what song it was, but my radio stopped at 770, and it was playing music! My first thought was "someone is on after sunset"...but no! Heard that famous "Musicradio...WABC!" jingle into a jock break... WABC is a VERY tough catch here in Memphis...it was SO cool!!!

Glad that WABC is playing music again on Saturdays to give all of us who DX the station a bit of nostalgia...nothing like hearing the hits from a faraway city with all of the AM noise in the background...

What time was that? Everytime I've tried to listen to WABC in Memphis on a Saturday night it gets creamed by something in Spanish after about 6 pm....

I remember being able to hear WABC in Houston in the 70's - all I had to do was null KOB.

15-LAC Nashville was a great music station, too.

Had to be about 8 or 8:30-ish last Saturday... I was on I-40 near Appling (not quite to 790's array off of Sycamore View).

By the end of the year, WABC, WLS, KAAY, and KKOB could be owned by the same company.

I didnt realize that KAAY was owned by Citadel!

It is interesting to see Radio Yesterday on their web site. Stuff from the 60's'70's etc.

Too bad that I can no longer really hear them anymore. Their signal level has dropped quite a bit from the "old days".

KAAY - Oldies/Radio Yesterday

HEY! Go to KAAYs web site http://www.1090kaay.com/ and they have a poll asking what people want to hear on KAAY. One of the choices is More KAAY Oldies!!! So far Oldies is outpacing Gospel and AC Christian.

Get some votes in there. MAYBE they will go back to the 60/70's! OK OK OK I can wish, cant I??

WABC plays music every saturday night 6- 10 PM (EST) and calls it "Saturday Night Oldies".

Try this for Beaker Street. Also some great history on how the show came to be on a tribute site for KAAY. Clyde Clifford, the engineer, originated the show from the transmitter site. The bed was used to cover the noise of the transmitter. It was a cost cutting thing. The management wanted to keep the station on the air, but didn't want to have to pay a DJ AND engineer. Clyde said, "Can I play anything I want?". They said, "Sure, just keep it on the air!". Funny how things work out and become legendary!!

Shortly after reading the short history given of the Golden Age of KAAY Radio as described on the website you just gave, I envisioned the jock hijacking the station and pulling (what turned to be several years later) a Radio Free Berkeley job whereas he would urge all and encourage all the DJs to stand in protest and listeners to flood the switchboard ala "Heidi Bowl" style as they rocked on through (what turned out to be) that last night.

Can you imagine the prestige and honor that KAAY would have in the Rock N' Roll world had someone there had the vision to pull off such a stunt back then? Even WABC would be green with envy!

But alas....What COULD have been....

Just a wicked thought :)

Cheers :)
